Adam: Hi, my name is Adam. Were doing a series of question and answers with Steve Soreno, the author of the Global Warming Survival Bible, Surviving and Prospering with Climate Change. Steve, we hear a lot about the 2012 prophecy. Is there a connection between 2012 and global warming?

Steve: Heres what I can tell you . Dec 21, 2012 is the end-date of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mayan Long Count calendar and based on that there are schools of thought that believe that on that date some unknown cataclysmic events will take place. While these beliefs have not been accepted by mainstream scholarship, or by us, no one can eliminate the possibility that 2012 will be in fact a major, gigantic milestone for global warming, even if that is just a coincidence.

Its difficult to say how bad global warming will get by 2012. However, what is probable to happen is that by then the race to acquire the resources required to live, to survive, to move around, to preserve the future of our families the race to attain these resources will become more intense due to global warming.

Adam: How do you mean?

Steve: As an example, and not necessarily by 2012, but at some point, a lot more people will became more interested in relocating from hot or low lying or drought-prone areas to safer locations. And if the migration doesnt happen in a large scale by then, it will at least start to impact real estate appraisals, local economies, prices of resources and investment valuations.

Were used to seeing real estate being considerably more valuable in warm climates and especially when it has a waterfront. Well, in a year or two, that model most likely will change especially in some areas. People will start looking into how that property will look like in 20-30 years from now, and in some cases if it will still, in fact, exist 20-30 years from now. And that sort of new thinking will impact the value of real estate. And, as a result, that will impact local economies and have an overall snow ball effect.

And something similar will happen to the value of resources and investments and so on.

And we dont know if that will happen in a year or in five, but we believe its something unavoidable and there are wise people that have already started taking action towards that before its too late.
