We should all be aware of the state of our planet. We are faced with pollution of all types - air, water, land, etc. In addition to the polluted state of things, we are getting limited on space for landfills and other places to dispose of our junk. Everyone needs to do their part to stop the waste and damage that is occurring all around us. Every person can do something, anything, to help. And that can start when you visit the store.

One of the biggest sources of waste at the grocery store has to be the plastic grocery sacks. Think about it, how many plastic grocery sacks do you get in one trip to the store? Even if you only buy a few items you will come home with about five plastic sacks. These sacks are a nuisance! You see them blowing down the street and stuck in bushes everywhere. Not only that, plastic takes a very long time to break down in landfills.

There are two things you can do to help with the plastic sack explosion. First of all, you can bring your own reusable sacks to the store. They are sturdy and convenient. It is good to get in the habit of keeping one or two of these bags in your car so you will always have a reusable bag with you for those quick trips to the store.

You can find shopping bags at many stores. In fact many grocery stores sell them right at the checkout counter. If you shop at IKEA they have a great selection of large, reusable bags in fun colors and patterns. You can be stylish while doing your shopping! These convenient bags come in a wide variety of sizes and materials. Some are made to last longer than others, so pay attention when you are picking one out. A bag made of heavy canvas will last longer than one made of vinyl. You will get what you pay for!

You can also recycle the plastic sacks that the grocery store uses. Many stores are offering recycling bins for used sacks. Just bring in your collection and add them to the bin. They will then be recycled into new bags. This is a good option to cut down on plastic waste, but bringing your own reusable bags will help cut down on the use of plastic all together!

Bringing your own bags to the store or recycling the plastic bags is such a simple thing to do. It takes very little effort on your part, yet if everyone would do this it would make a huge impact on our environment. Isn't it worth it?
