Golf: A Sport For The Whole Family

My six year old daughter came to me the other day with a handout from her school

, advertising a junior golf academy. She was hoping that it was something we could do together as a family, and I don't think it's a bad idea. The nice thing about golf is that it's a hobby that most people can pursue, and even if they aren't good against other players, they can always compete with themselves for a personal best. Where our children range in age from nine to one, it is a game we can play as a family. Well, the one year old might not be so great at it, but I know he would love riding the golf cart and spending time outside with the family.

If we do decide to join the academy or otherwise take lessons in Orange County, golf clubs would be on the top of our list to get. I wouldn't want to spend too much money at first; just the least expensive and most basic sets for the children, and something a bit higher quality for my wife and myself. I'd have to take a look at them with an expert or with and instructor, just to make sure my purchase was well-founded. There really is no use in spending money for something that won't get the job done, or that will be far more than we will ever use.

I think one of the best things about golf is the opportunity to play outside in the fresh air and sunlight, in a setting that is well groomed and beautiful. Golf also tends to sharpen the mind and improve depth perception, and from some of my more active friends, there are a lot of personal metaphysical and esoteric lessons that can be learned from golf. I don't know if my little children would see it that way, but once they have played for a few years and grown into the game, they may be the ones enlightening me.

So to get a taste for the sport, we're planning on taking the family to play some miniature golf, just so they can see what it is like to aim and putt. If they take to that, we can give the lessons for the real game some better consideration. This could be the start of a life-long family building pursuit, and I can see us playing this with our children and grandchildren for the next several decades.
