Google Announces Annihilation Of 7 More Products
Wow. Don't get too attached to anything Google rolls out in the near future
, they might just obliterate it soon after.
In the third round of massive shutdowns at Google, the company has announced it will be tossing out seven more products, including Google Wave, Google Gears and Google Bookmarks List.
A Simpler, More Intuitive Google
"We're in the process of shutting a number of products which haven't had the impact we'd hoped for, "declared Urs Hozle, Google's vice president of operations, "integrating others as features into our broader product efforts, and ending several which have shown us a different path forward. Overall, our aim is to build a simpler, more intuitive, truly beautiful Google user experience."
Hmm. Is Google taking a cue from Apple? Switching to a more focused and selective approach when it comes to releasing new products? Whereas Google has offered a steady and abundant stream of new innovations throughout the years, Apple generally only releases a small group of new products once or twice a year.
Focusing On What?
There has been some speculation that Google is streamlining so it can focus on Google+, the firm's own Facebook rival, though it is unclear if this is actually the case.
Whatever the case, experts warn that Google will have to be more cautious in the near future when announcing the launch of new products, especially since they have put so many on the chopping block recently.
"[Google] can hype the bejesus out of new announcements," explains Richard Edwards, the principal analyst at Ovum, a research firm, "and it can be difficult for people to pick out the substance from the hype."
What Else is Being Shut Down?
Apart from Google Wave, Google Gears and Google Bookmarks List, Google is also shutting down Google Friend Connect, which has become completely unnecessary after the release of Google+, Google Search Timeline, which let you see a graph of historical results from a query, Google Knol, which was Google's answer to Wikipedia, and the Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal project, which was an initiative to drive down the coast of renewable energy and research ways to improve solar power technology.
How Will These Shutdowns Really Affect Google?
These shutdowns definitely have the potential to negatively affect how people perceive new product launches by the company, but if Google does succeed in better focusing its energy, I'm convinced the results will be truly exciting.
