Selecting a URL

This is a very straight forward process and you can do it by either selecting the website url in the address bar with the full url including the http tag or you can right click a website link on a webpage and then use the option to copy hyperlink or link. Make sure you have the full URL in question especially if it is a very long URL when copying it from the address bar. If unsure copy the url and place it in a notepad or text editor program to ensure it matches the website URL.

With links on webpages it is a lot easier for long URL's as the copy option will capture all of the URL information.

Go to Google's URL shortening website which is goo.gl. Once on the page all you have to do is paste the url into the box and press the shorten button. Google will automatically shorten the URL for example to http goo.gl FYj8. Once done you can use this URL instead of a long URL and the good thing is that this will be permanent and should work according to Google for ever or until all their services stops whichever comes first.

You can build a short url history by logging into your Google account and then every short URL you create will be recorded for you to re-use instead of using long domain name or link. You can have a bookmarked list of URL's you can build up. There will be the "normal" long URL you selected and next to it the shortened Google URL that was created. Next to that will be the time it was created. There is also a Details link to the right of the URL's. This contains traffic analysis of the use of your short URL.

You can break down the click information from the past 2 hours, day, week, month & all time. This is displayed in a Traffic Sources graph indicating the amount of clicks over time. Below that you get your visitors profile telling you the country of origin and their browser as well as their Operating System platform.

Wih the shortened URL's you can use this on any site or where there is a limitation to the characters (Twitter) this shortened URL can help save you time and hassle.

As part of Google's guarantee they will not allow spam and or unwanted material be distributed through their URL shortening service. All such URL's will be deleted. The good thing is you get a service with a built in protection layer.

As always Google are using the URL shortening to analyse traffic somewhere along the line they will leverage this and start pumping adsenes traffic and services through there as it gives them another area to use.

This will give Google another way of collecting data on what sites people visit and distribute to friends and can analyse the traffic and which areas will be of interest to them and how traffic flows and is processed apart from through the Google search engine.

The other issue I can see is that you can inadvertantly add a URL for a site you don't want and then you cannot remove the URL. There is no option to remove a shortened link from your list It wont take much for a couple of pranks to be pulled with hilarious results and long term embarrassment for the other person. All of the links that are created are permanent.

You cannot delete any shortened URL list, this can cause a bit of a problem and I suspect Google will bring out this functionality in the near future. As for Google they promise to resolve this issue of spam with their algorithms to prevent any spam of being distributed and prevent any viral loads from being used as click through infections. The links are also public and can be shared by anyone which means you have no control over who sees your links and where they go to.
