Got A Collection Of Artwork That You Don't Know How To Hang
?
Walls without decoration add a very empty, clinical feeling to any space. To add personality and warmth to these empty walls we tend to use art work of varying descriptions which appeal to our personal nature. Ultimately, the pieces you choose to display don't just beautify a space, but give the outsider an inclination as to your personality, tastes and preferences. Your art collections communicate meaning about who you are, to the people around you.
But as there exists so many differing personalities in this world so it is that we display things in a multitude of different ways. Some personalities like an adhoc collection of pieces mixed together. Other people would choose to display simple pieces within the same genre, and yet other people tend to do something in between. With all of these many and varying art collections to display, there are simple rules which still apply across the board, no matter which style is yours.
There are many providers out there today which will curate and hang your collection for you, but if you are going to attempt picture hanging yourself, here are some basic tips to get you off to a good start.
The placement on the wall of any particular piece of artwork is the number one priority. As a general rule, pictures should be hung at just above eye level to enhance the overall impact of the picture as, for example, a small picture hung too high loses detail.
Symmetry isn't absolutely necessary in a large collection, but there should be an overall balance to the art and decorative items when all are finally grouped together and hung.
The best way to achieve balance when hanging pictures is to make a rough sketch or draft of the layout you have in mind which covers colour, alignment, distance, shape and the preferred arrangement of your artworks on the wall. This will enable you to get a visual gauge as to whether your ideas will work before you start hanging, ideally from an appropriate hanging system.
Proper lighting is crucial to show your art collection to its best advantage. This doesn't mean bright light everywhere, but subtle, more low-key light which enhances either each individual piece or highlights specific pieces within a collection.
If your collection has a key piece which will be the focal point of the collection, try to hang it in the centre and then radiate out from there with your other pieces. Don't forget to keep the overall balance in mind.
Try to avoid large open spaces within a collection. It gives an overall disjointed impression.
Be careful not to clutter your artwork as each piece can then lose its individual beauty.
It can become a real juggling act trying to achieve all of these points, but if you can manage it, the impact of your art collection will be breath taking and a talking point for all those who are lucky enough to see it.
