The purpose of any grain storage facility is to prevent grain quality loss from weather, wind, moisture, insects, rodents, birds and microorganisms. There are different facilities used for temporary grain storage. If the facility is durable, the grain can be stored there for longer without loss.

Existing buildings can be used for temporary grain storage. Buildings such as empty barns, stud framed shops, garages and pole buildings utilized for machinery storage can be used for that purpose. It is important that the building location must be drained first before it can be turned into grain storage facility. If the chosen building does not have a concrete floor, it is necessary to place the grain in plastic. This is to prevent moisture from seeping to the grain from the ground. It is also advisable to keep grain in plastic even if the floor is concrete, especially when it is cracked.

Separate bin walls can also serve as a temporary grain storage facility, especially for emergency grain storage. Round bin rings can easily be erected: two or three steel rings from round grain bins can be placed on an existing floor. These rings should be anchored with something recommended by the manufacturer. Plywood bins can also be made; it is critical for the plywood sheets to be secured with fasteners and nails to prevent the bin from bursting.

Concrete silos are generally considered as the best grain storage facility. They are specifically built and made waterproof to hold and protect grain. It is essential that every silo has a weather tight roof and chute, as well as a foundation drainage.
