Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours Must Be Reserved In Advance

It seems that not a single day goes by without someone asking me if they need to book their Grand Canyon helicopter tour in advance

. Naturally, my immediate response is always "Yes." Over and above the fact that supply can't meet demand, there are also a number of other reasons:

Sunrise and sunset flights are often overbooked. This is when the canyon really comes to life, and travelers who have done their homework know this. Cancellations are rare, especially during the summer months (high season).

Many travelers feel that morning flights are the best, and also that they offer the most amount of flexibility.

Visibility is simple awesome in the mornings, but of course this is because air quality is better at that time of day. Weather in and around the canyon can changed suddenly; if flights are delayed, thos at the top of the list will be given priority.

The tour helicopter can only take 6 passengers at a time.

In other words, seats are very limited. For the safety of passengers and crew, weight in the cabin must be distributed equally - very heavy passengers might be asked to purchase a second seat.

During fall and winter, days are shorter than they are in summer. As you might expect, this can also mean less seats during certain times of the year. With fall and winter being the low season, most of the operators reduce the number of daily flights being offered.

Booking in advance is cheaper. Book online in advance and you will save a huge wad of cash compared to the retail/rack rate with which you'll get slammed IF you successfully purchase a same-day flight at the heliport.

Whether you leave from Vegas or the South Rim, my advice to book in advance stands. For Vegas travelers, helicopter tours only visit the West Rim and the Las Vegas Strip. To do the South Rim, you must take a 45-minute airplane flight and transfer to a helicopter.

West Rim tours include:

1. Head to the bottom. Descend 4,000 feet to the base. Deplane and explore the ancient floor. You'll be glad to know, champagne is included. Feel free to upgrade if you would like to experience a wonderful trip on the water.

2. The Grand Canyon Sky Walk. Enjoy your flight while the pilot takes you to land at Grand Canyon West. The Glass Bridge, a large structure made from glass and sticking out 70 feet over the edge, given you a superb view of the Colorado River flowing 4,000 feet below.

3. Basic air tour. Fly over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, a Joshua Tree forest, and the Mojave Desert. Above the West Rim, the pilot will do a U-turn. Upgrade to include a Las Vegas Strip flyover.

The South Rim flights which depart from the Grand Canyon Airport near the National Park in Tusayan, fly you into the Dragoon Corridor via the Kaibab Plateau, and then turn back above the North Rim. If you want to ultimate experience, upgrade to an EcoStar 130.

Canyon helicopter tours are incredibly popular with visitors to Las Vegas and Arizona. To enjoy this aerial adventure, I strongly recommend you book your tour in advance. Seats are limited, especially during sunrise and sunset flights. The great thing is getting to the front of the line has never been easier. Just log on to the Internet and RSVP. With the booking taken care of and out of the way, you're ready to enjoy the "Canyon" the way it's supposed to be enjoyed. From the safety of a helicopter!
