The famous I Love NY logo is seen printed on everything from T-shirts to buttons, it's a hot seller not only in New York but all over the country. His notable singer's silhouette adorned with lightning bolts of colorful hair is well known to a whole generation.

And whether they know it or not, record enthusiasts of the 60's probably own at least one piece of his work. Many people recognize his work even if they don't know his name, but can it be considered art? The designer doesn't want to talk about that. He'd rather we just didn't use the word 'art'. To him, all pieces should be called 'work'. Then, when one is really good, it can be called 'great work'. We call it excellent when it performs a function, and we call it bad if it happens to miss the target.

You may have heard of a large exhibit he held; it showed the 'Picasso of Design's' means of inspiration. A red nylon rope wove itself through his works to the early sketches and concept drawings that begin the design process. He says art is a process. By speculating, you can find inspiration and find a wonderful solution, even though you hadn't a clue to where you were headed in the beginning.

One finished painting featured in this exhibit was created because of an angel postcard and a simple set of wings made from paper. These things hang on a wall that's opposite of the crouched angel that adorns the finished painting. Another famous piece of art opposes a well-known comic strip that led the way for the artist. A poster he created features a famous pianist that is sneezing, making light of the idea that some people have "stuffy" thoughts about classical music.

As a designer, he feels that using the world's visual resources help him to communicate a feeling and a message. Working for an Italian typewriter company, a famous painting was utilized to send his message. The famous work shows a sad dog posing beside it's master's feet. The master is clearly dead. The designer's work shows a red typewriter with a dog shown in a similar pose.

He was instrumental in starting up an extremely influential studio in New York that helped take design to a greater level. Teaching other city magazines across the nation, he helped create a big city's magazine. His designs can be viewed as a permanent exhibit in a well-known trade center, as well as be seen in the restaurants and observation deck on location. He was also the designer of the red AIDs ribbon which is an instantly recognizable icon. He likes to push the boundaries of design, which is one of the reasons he doesn't like the singular term art as a descriptive of what he does, as he likes to do a little bit of everything.

You would probably easily recognize a poster of this designer's work; there were over six million prints made of a famous male singer. The singer's hair is quite colorful in the poster, and is in keeping with an iconic profile made by another notable artist Some have suggested the graphic designer must have been taking mind-altering chemicals when he created it.
