Great Hair Starts At The Scalp

Your scalp is a pretty big player when it comes to great hair

. After all, your scalp is doing the job of holding your hair to your head. Yet all too often the scalp gets neglected or overlooked as part of a hair care routine.

A healthy scalp will definitely give you better hair. An undernourished or damaged scalp can cause hair follicles to become blocked, meaning as hair falls out, new strands don't come back. It also helps distribute the natural oils and nutrients that your hair needs to stay strong, healthy and hold its shine.

If your scalp seems to leave white residue behind or is lumpy or itchy, you probably have neglected it too long. Start with a hairbrush to stimulate, exfoliate and gently massage your scalp. The best brushes have spaced bristles with plastic bulbs on the end to prevent scratches. Start at the top of your forehead and move your brush in small circles all the way to the base of your neck. Repeat this process a few times to properly lift and remove and dead skin cells.

If possible, try to wash your hair only every other day. Too much washing strips away the naturally produced oils which nourish and moisturize your strands. The same attention needs to be given to the scalp during the wash. Always work towards the top of your head, and apply enough pressure that the skin moves beneath your fingers. A circular motion will stimulate the scalp and aid regeneration. Start at the temples and work up to the top of the head, then start from the neck and again, move upwards.

Intensive cleansing is really only necessary about once a month. Too much use of clarifying or anti-residue shampoos can be harmful to your scalp causing it to dehydrate. Besides, you won't even have the urge to deep treat your hair, when you see how wonderful it looks once you've got your scalp in great shape.
