Great Kitchen Tips For Students

Students are well known for not being the most amazing cooks

. While there are plenty of young people that know their way around a kitchen, there's a good reason for this reputation - many students starting out at university are living away from home for the first time, and therefore haven't had to fend for themselves much when it comes to meals. This means that while they may be well versed in how to make simple meals and snacks, they probably won't be as familiar with making entire evening meals. Hence the repetitive pasta, toast and fry up related dishes that seem to often grace the kitchens of students.

It needn't be this way though, there are plenty of healthy, tasty and - most importantly - easy recipes out there that can make sure students are well fed whatever their culinary skills. Pasta and pesto is sure to remain a student favourite for years to come, but why not jazz it up a little by adding sun blush tomatoes, chorizo or chicken? On the other hand, you can use pesto as a great marinade for meat or as a way to jazz up a boring salad.

Stir fries are another perfect choice for students. Quick and easy, stir fries rely on hot temperatures to make sure that vegetable stay nice and crispy and full of nutrients. What's more, rice and noodles typically don't take more than 10 minutes to cook so a stir fries perfect in you're a student in a hurry.

If that sounds like too much hassle after a hard day, then turn your attention to the humble baked potato. Bung a potato in the microwave for 10 minutes or so or pop it in the oven for another 40 minutes and all you have to do is grate some cheese on top for a quick meal. Add some beans or swap your filling for tuna and you'll be glad to know you're getting lots of essential nutrients from what feels a lot like fast food.

One dish that students tend not to think of making for themselves is soup. After all, it's one that comes in a can or carton if you want it. Making soup from scratch is really, really easy and it's the kind of thing that's packed with goodness and can sit in the freezer for ages once it's been made. Casseroles and stews are another good choice, you can find some that basically only ask you to bung a bunch of ingredients together in an ovenproof dish, a handy item any student kitchen ware collection, and leave to roast for a few hours - just enough time to do a little homework while waiting for it to heat up!
