The difference between a great outdoor wedding photo and a not so great outdoor wedding
photo can be easily distinguished by the type of lighting available. Unfortunately gaining great outdoor wedding photos depends on how the wedding photographer works with the weather conditions they are given. Knowing how to manipulate natural light gives a professional photographer a greater advantage amongst their competition.
In outdoor wedding photography lighting is everything. Before the shooting begins, the wedding photographer should examine the area to determine where the best lighting to take the wedding photos would be. You may think that the perfect weather for a wedding is on a clear sunny day however, wedding photographers pray for clouds to produce a soft natural light for the best wedding photos. Soft light that may appear on an overcast day or areas that are lightly shaded give off a the type of light which is ideal for wedding photos compared to hard direct light.
Hard direct light creates shadows and can be unflattering when taking portrait and up close photographs. However, if used properly the hard light can create dynamic and dramatic photos. If hard light is your only option it is up to the photographer to make it work by trying different angles and using flashes to fill in the empty spaces of light.
The best thing any couple can do to make sure they have the most amazing wedding photographs is to have a backup plan. A couple cannot expect perfect weeding pictures for their outdoor wedding if it is pouring rain outside. Whether tents need to be set up or the wedding moved inside a backup plan is a must. The photographer will take it from there and work with the inside or dreary outside weather.
