Great Plains Supporting Older Versions 7.5, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5

Accounting software is not something that you think you have to change every three years

, right? And we agree with you. So lets think that you are running your business and do record keeping in Great Plains Dynamics version 5.0 which was implemented ten years ago. This year you need to train couple of new users in AR and AP. You call to local consulting firm. They come out onsite and after looking at the version they realize that they are not familiar with this old interface and do not have technicians who can do data repair on Pervasive SQL 2000. Now you see the results of software obsolescence. Yes we do but what are our options now? Lets try to take a look at what could be done:

1.The pool of consultants who is doing the job at least ten years might be limited. New hires are usually trained in the most recent version and this is fair as new installations require more consulting time and customizations. If you do not have a luck to find somebody local then try somebody who knows your interface and can support remotely

2.How does remote support work? If you need to show the problem on your computer screen then it might be done via web session. Good example is Gotomeeting where you share your monitor, keyboard and mouse with remote consultant. When you have data repair needs then your presence might be not required and in this case such technologies as GotomyPC or VPN with remote desktop connection to your server might be a way to go

Lets now answer few questions:

Q. We are on 7.5 but it is probably the same as current version 2010, right? Is it possible to upgrade?

A. Yes it is Dynamics GP and you can upgrade all the way to 2010. Often the problem is access to registration key. If you have active annual enhancement contract then you have the key. But if not then you have to come through reenrollment process where you should expect to pay penalty

Q. We got incorrect data in couple of historical invoices. Probably it was due to interrupted posting. Is it possible to fix? By the way we are on 6.0 on Pervasive SQL 2000

A. If you would like to do it yourself then try ODBC connection from Microsoft Access (Linked Table). In order to connect you would need DDF files. Please read admin manual about GenDDF utility. When produced File.ddf, Index.ddf and Field.ddf files should be copied in company root directory on the server

Q. We are getting strange error message about incorrect location when login the workstation. At this point nobody can access the system. Do you know what it is?

A. Yes. Btrieve accesses files via operating system. It needs to know where files hosting Btrieve tables are. More likely what happened is you moved Dynamics folder from one server to another. Please read about location translation in the manual. You need to translate location
