Great Plains Supporting The Whole Spectrum Of Versions
Currently this ERP application is part of Microsoft Dynamics family but it is often referred as Great Plains by its original name
. Lets begin with future version and then go back to current and historical ones. We do not pretend to be too technical as our goal is popularization. I am Andrew Karasev and I will be your narrator. At the end we will answer several questions. If your question is not answered here feel free to email it to us. Lets begin:
1.2013. In this release we expect web client which should move Dynamics GP to Cloud computing realm. We expect it in the fall of 2012 and as events unfold we will be commenting more in our blog
2.2010. Initially it was referred as 11.0 but before release renamed into 2010. Microsoft seems to make substantial advancements in user first page with metrics, Outlook integration, To-dos, My reports and Quick Links
3.10.0. In this version security model was redesigned. Old security parts are now hidden under tasks and roles. Plus we would like to mention that GP is now in multiple windows (not in one frame as it used to be before) in order to facilitate Workflow. Also upgrade became service pack sensitive and original installation CD became useless
4.9.0. Support is no longer available directly from Microsoft Business Solution tech support team. At this point Microsoft Small Business Financials was announced as discontinued and customers were recommended to migrate to Dynamics GP Business Ready
5.8.0. On original installation CD it is named as Microsoft Great Plains. Since 8.0 GP is available exclusively on Microsoft SQL Server DB platform
6.7.5. This one was the last one available on Pervasive SQL 2000/Btrieve and Ctree. Small customers were attracted by Select on MSDE 2000 (free scaled down Microsoft SQL Server)
7.7.0. Was short living one as 7.5 was released shortly and most customers updated to 7.5. Seems like annoying batch posting crash issue was resolved in Batch Recovery form
8.6.0. Great Plains Software tried to go for large corporate customers with eEnterprise brand (formerly known as Dynamics C/S+ but eEnterprise probably sounds better)
9.5.5. This was time when Intellisol Advanced Purchase Order Processing and Project Accounting were popular but Great Plains begin its Match Data acquisition resulted in GP Project Accounting (on Match Data code base)
10.5.0. Icontrol manufacturing is in transition to be integrated but it was long way ahead
11.4.0. Probably this one secured mass market penetration. Was available also on Mac
12.3.2. This was one step toward success. Earlier Dynamics versions we would like to skip as we never seen customer in production with them
13.Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Windows and Macintosh 9.5, 9.2 and earlier. This application is not coded in Dexterity. It is predecessor of Dynamics. We are in love with this very fast and simple system and have large number of customers
So folks you see parade of versions above. Now lets begin questions and answers session:
Q. We are on Mac GP 4.0 and thank you for mentioning that above. Database seems to be Ctree/Faircom but it is not perfect from the sense of reliability. I as IT manager have to launch Check Links every weekend and it runs more than 24 hours and I have to babysit it. Would you recommend something to make my job easier?
A. We would recommend create historical company and copy data from production. Then in client application purge historical data it is likely SOP History or maybe RM or PM History. It is easy to estimate the size of the table by reviewing file size on the server. Check Links time might be reduced dramatically to maybe one hour or something like that
Q. Small Business Financials 9.0 and we are trying to create check with nice font and plus invoice with our logo. It seems like graphical form is not available in Report Writer. Do you have a clue?
A. Yes, what we usually do for SBF customers we export report in package and then make it graphical by importing and editing in Dynamics GP version of RW (every consultant has GP installed on the laptop, smile). Then you export from GP a package and import into Small Business Financials
Q. I am trying to do data conversion from Great Plains Accounting 9.2 to SAP Business One. I cannot create ODBC connection to GPA database. Could you give me directions?
A. Were you able to create DDF files? If not please read ODBC manual available on 9.2 installation CD. In our opinion the easiest way to create ODBC DSN is in Pervasive SQL Control Center
Q. I need to update quantity allocated for one of the inventory items. But I cannot connect and dont know which tool to use. We are on version 6.0 Pervasive
A. There is GenDDF utility which should allow you to create DDF files. When created copy these files into company root directory on the server. At this point you are ready to create DSN. We like MS Access and Linked Table there to correct fields
