Great Room Decor: How To Create Warm Mediterranean Style

It seems that we are in love with Mediterranean and Tuscan style

. We outfit our kitchens with tiled murals and brick ovens and let the sunny beauty of the welcoming decorative style spill out onto patios and outdoor kitchens. No wonder! Mediterranean style is full of color, warmth and an earthiness that feels natural and lush. Why not give your great room the same treatment?

Warm up the Walls

Warm colors like sienna and ochre are just one element of creating a warm backdrop for Mediterranean style. The other element is texture: Stucco techniques and textured granules that are added to paint will let you achieve this effect. If you would rather not add real texture to your walls, go faux. Choose rag or sponge painting to create a color washing effect that feels as authentic as the sun-drenched terra cotta of Positano. You local paint store or home improvement store can advise you on products, techniques, prep and supplies.

Flooring: Authenticity is Afoot

Brick, marble, porcelain or terra cotta tile are authentic flooring choices. However, wood floors can easily accent a rustic Mediterranean decor. Bring in your color choices through colorful Tuscan or Spanish style area rugs. You can use an area rug over wall-to-wall carpeting as well to anchor seating areas and build a color palette.

Furnishings: Simply Stunning

While Mediterranean style can be elegant, in a family room where everyday use and comfort are facts of life, you may be wisely inclined to explore the rustic end of Mediterranean style. Think of a Tuscan villa with sturdy wood furniture, forgivable textured fabrics and a simple layout that suits the function of your family room. Mediterranean furniture is typically low to the floor but set on raised feet and legs, versus bulky pieces that sit directly on the floor. Choose chunky woods or wrought iron and go for warm natural colors like olive green, gold and burgundy. Mix fabric patterns with Old World appeal, pairing solids with fruits, vineyard motifs and scrolled designs.

Accents: Mediterranean Comfort and Warmth

Accent the walls with simple wrought iron grilles, ceramic paintings, and tapestries and use lamps, candle holders and wall sconces, pillows and throws and table top accessories to accent your color theme and tie a thread of continuity throughout the room. Accents with sunflower, vineyard, and hand-painted Italian ceramic or villa motifs are all apropos.

Accent a natural focal point, such as the space above the fireplace, with a canvas painting of Tuscan vineyard or an elaborately framed wrought iron wall mirror that makes the room feel open and bright. Use the mantle to display authentically detailed pottery and ceramic figurines, a fragrant rosemary or lemon thyme topiary or wrought iron candlesticks and a lush flower arrangement.

Simple window treatments can control light, add privacy and contribute to style. Try woven wood shades over windows with curtain panels to each side hung from wrought iron curtain rods.
