Great Room Re-do: Refresh With Color
If you are getting the urge to redo your great room
, little changes can add up and create big impact. Add a refreshing twist to your great room with a splash of color.
Go boldly where you have never gone before.
You have probably always heard that dark colors make a room feel smaller and light colors visually enlarge a space. This generally true, but against accents, window treatments and furniture in lighter tones, dark walls provide contrast. In a large great room, especially, darker walls can be effective in making the space feel cozy and more intimate. Use bright and dramatic accent colors in slipcovers, pillows, fabric trims and area rugs to create energy and create a color echo throughout the room by repeating your accent colors. This helps unify the space and creates a well designed atmosphere.
Underscore with texture.
Paint additives add texture to walls and make color even more effective. Choose from fine, medium and coarse additives depending on the look you wish to create; this is also a great way to hide imperfections in the walls or to cover wall paper. Specialty textured rollers let you customize the look even more. Sparkle textures add reflected light to your walls which will make the space seem larger.
Since it is difficult to recreate the same texture later on, be sure that you add enough texturizing granules to the proper amount of paint so that you can complete the job in one application. Texturizing requires about one third more paint than normal; include the amount needed for the ceiling as well.
You can also create texture with techniques like rag rolling and sponging. Very similar tones will create a subtle effect and contrasting tones are more dramatic. You can use a combination of two, three or four colors and you may find it best to perfect your technique and the effect you wish to create on a scrap piece of drywall. Allot enough time to complete each stage of your project in one time block because it can be difficult to achieve the same results after some time has passed.
Other painting techniques that add texture to walls include stippling, color washing and dragging. Your local home improvement store is a great source for viewing samples of various techniques, gaining tips on how to create a look and gathering all needed supplies.
When you don not want to paint a whole room
When you don not want the expense or labor intensive undertaking of repainting your entire great room, there are other ways of adding color and style in smaller doses. You can draw attention to a focal wall by painting it in a deeper shade and letting a well chosen work of canvas or metal wall art stand out against a rich hue. You can also paint woodwork or trim or add molding to your walls in squares or rectangles to create the illusion of paneled walls.
Something as simple as adding bold new pillows or changing lamp shades or side tables, so that everything is not predictable will bring a breath of fresh air to a tired great room.
