Times have changed and the distinction between office and home or street clothes has for many fused into one

. In times gone past a visit to the office meant a uniform of suit and tie even if there were never any visitors. Famously, in the early days of radio in the U.K the announcers had to sit at the microphone wearing full dinner jacket and bow tie. Many professions still insist on a fairly strict code. City workers in banks and insurance companies still expect the suit and tie for men and equally smart dress for women. Front of house employees are also expected to present a certain smart code. For many though, and particularly in service industries, dress code has relaxed completely. The division between work and home no longer applies. If someone is comfortable in what they wear they are in any case more likely to do a better job than a person uncomfortable in a suit. Guessing the profession of a person walking down a street in London for instance used to be very simple 50 years ago. If the man wore a bowler hat he was a professional man. This would mean a civil servant of some kind, a banker, an insurance worker or perhaps someone of the legal profession. In any event the bowler denoted middle or senior management of some sort.

Nowadays younger people notably in smaller service companies can be seen going to work in clothes like those at Blend of America. Relaxed, comfortable designer style which are as much at home in the office as at home or on the football terrace. It may be shirts,shoes,socks,jackets,jumpers ,hoodies or jeans; all are now accepted as work and leisure wear. How shocked the bowler and brolly brigade would feel now at the usual mix of casual and suited people crossing bridges over the Thames in London on their way to work. Look at any of those old black and white photographs of predominately middle aged men marching like old soldiers in their suits and bowlers on their way to the City. Most of them only had one or two suits. One usually for everyday and one for special, presumably like a lunch appointment with the next manager up his tree of career progression.

The choice now is infinite compared to the old guard in their pinstripe suits. When those old boys went home they changed into clothes very much like their working suits. The choices did not exist as they do today. How dull it must have been to remove a pinstripe jacket and tie and replace it for the evening with another jacket of simply a different colour and pattern.
