Green Data Center Seattle: Energy Consumption At Data Centers

This article will discuss energy consumption trends at data centers and the benefits of a green data center in Seattle

. According to the U.S. Department of Energy a non-green data center in Seattle can consume up to 100 times more energy than a standard office building. However, the IT equipment within a non-green data center in Seattle often uses less than 15 percent of original source energy.

The U.S Department of Energy's research also showed energy consumption at data centers doubled from 2000 to 2006, reaching more than 60 billion kilowatt hours annually. Some experts expect this number to double again by 2011 unless there is an increase in the number of green data centers in Seattle and other cities or the implementation of energy-saving measures.

The Department of Energy created multiple scenarios depicting continued growth through 2011. These scenarios are titled the Historical Trends Scenario, the Currency Efficiency Scenario, the Improved Operation Scenario, the Best Practice Scenario and the State of the Art Scenario. These scenarios will be discussed below.

The Historical Trends Scenario discusses data center growth through 2011 if historical energy usage at data centers and technology trends continue. If historical usage and technology trends continue data center energy usage is expected to reach just over 120 billion kilowatt hours of annual energy consumption.


The Current Efficiency Trends Scenario discusses the growth in data center energy consumption based on current energy efficiency technology standards, i.e. a green data center in Seattle, and best practices. If energy efficiency technology standards and best practices are implement by a majority of data centers energy consumption is estimated to reach just under 110 billion kilowatt hours annually.

The Improved Operation Scenario discusses several energy-saving measures such as moderately adopting energy-efficient servers, eliminating unused servers and improving infrastructure energy efficiency by up to 30 percent through airflow management. If these energy-saving measures are implemented energy consumption is estimated to reach just over 80 billion kilowatt hours annually.

The Best Practice Scenario is the first scenario discussed that shows a drop in data center energy consumption in 2011 relative to 2006 levels. This scenario includes implementing several energy-saving measures including aggressive adoption of energy-efficient servers, moderate consolidation of data centers and use of improved chillers, fans and free cooling. If these best practice energy-saving measures are implemented energy consumption is estimated to reach 40 billion kilowatt hours annually.


The State of the Art Scenario discusses the most drastic reduction in data center energy consumption. This scenario includes all of the changes discussed within the Best Practice Scenario and adds liquid cooling, power management application and combined heat and power. This scenario would result in energy consumption reaching just over 30 billion kilowatt hours annually.

Many data centers are making an effort to implement energy-saving measures and the popularity of green data centers in Seattle and elsewhere has risen drastically.

A green data center in Seattle is a repository for the storage, management, and dissemination of data in which the mechanical, lighting, electrical, and computer systems are designed for maximum energy efficiency and minimum environmental impact. These services should all be heavily considered when choosing a data center.
