Prince Edward Island Lighthouses
Prince Edward Island Lighthouses
The first Prince Edward Island and Green Gable settlers traveled mainly by water to get around the island, and nothing was more important to those on the boats than the lighthouses that dotted the shores. Lighthouses played a heavy part in both trade and commerce, equaling the importance of the railway system following the formation of the Confederation.
The first generation of lighthouses were built prior to 1873. These were octagonal in shape and built of wood and timber. The second generation lighthouses were constructed after 1873 and can be recognized from their square tapered shape. These second-gen lighthouses were also constructed of wood. However much of the wood was imported from New Brunswick because PEI's natural timber supply was depleted due to the hyper-building activity of the shipbuilding industry. All lighthouses, both first and second-gen had individual markings and a distinguishing flash pattern.
There are numerous campgrounds, private cottages for rent, hotels, motels, resorts and bread and breakfast places located near the lighthouses. Ask you travel agent to find accommodations that best suit your needs and travel plans for exploring one of PEI's beloved treasures.
