Every Eucharist is both the sacramental celebration of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the memory of his passion, death and resurrection, as well as the wedding feast of the Lamb which glorified the Lord calls us why, our communion with his Body and His Blood , become one body, His Mystical Body, the Church (cf. Col 1, 24).Even today we all gathered around the Lord's table to celebrate the holy mysteries of our faith. We participate in the holy sacrifice offering to God the Father in our grief and concerns, our difficulties, but above all our lives, so combining the grace of the Holy Spirit in perpetual quell'oblazione with which Jesus Christ offers himself to God the Father. We share the belief in the passage from death to life of our Lord and Savior Jesus of Nazareth on the earnest hope of following the path, relying on his own promise: "I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he die, live "(Jn 11, 25).
We participate in the Eucharistic banquet nourished by the Word of God we have heard and, above all, the bread of life come down from heaven (cf. Jn 6, 51) to support us during the difficult earthly pilgrimage toward the true heavenly home.United Triune God in the celebration of the Eucharist, the sacrifice of the New Covenant (cf. 1 Cor 11, 25), we present the goodness of God, "rich in mercy" (Eph 2, 4) As we pray for His Eminence Mr. Cardinal Jan Pieter Schotte, the Lord of life called him 30 days ago. In the spirit of faith we want to thank Almighty God for the gift of his life, embellished by great human qualities, Christian priests and bishops. We do not want to dwell on a detailed presentation of its significant theological and legal assistance, of his impressive work in the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, to which he belonged, or of the Holy See, which has devoted over 20 years of full service, especially since December 20, 1983 Pope John Paul II wanted to raise it to the episcopal dignity, after giving him various positions in the Holy See and the Roman Curia, including, for almost 19 years, that of Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops.Following the word of the Gospel of St. John, who was proclaimed, I would, however, illustrate three aspects which seem to me bearing the personality and mission of the late Cardinal.
I do share the meaning of pain rather than mourn his sudden departure, as well as common Christian hope in the resurrection of the dead. Believers to live by this double attitude helps us experience God's great servant Job. Prostrate in the loss of his loved ones and all the goods, he is illuminated from above, made a profession of faith that only the light of the revelation of Jesus Christ acquires a clear and deep meaning: I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at last he will stand upon the earth, and after that my skin is destroyed, without my flesh I shall see God (Job 19, 25-26).In the chapter devoted to the multiplication of the loaves, St. John the Evangelist presents the Lord Jesus, obedient to the will of God the Father: "All that the Father gives me will come to me, whoever comes to me, not cast, I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me "(Jn 6, 37-38). Jesus Christ, taking the form of a servant (Phil. 2, 7), wanted to do the will of his Father (cf. Heb 10: 9).
Obedience is the essential characteristic of the life of Jesus Christ. The same could be said of his faithful servant Cardinal Jan. Since being called to serve the Church, has always been willing to do the will of God that is expressed regularly by his superiors. In the last decades of his life, the will of God was communicated by the Supreme Pontiff, to whom he was united by deep bonds of reverence, love, loyalty and obedience. Those who knew him closely can testify about his unfailing obedience to God and the Bishop of Rome and President of the Synod of Bishops. Convinced that obedience, often done with expressions of joyful service, was tested at times not always easy for her delicate and important pastoral activity. In the Gospel passage, then, the evangelist emphasizes the work of units held by the Lord Jesus, referring to the words of the Lord: "And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of what he told me gave, but it raises the last day "(Jn 6, 39). In order to achieve the precise purpose of the resurrection of the dead, additional work needs to rally the faithful and men of good will in one fold, so that listening to the voice of the divine Master of life become, "one flock and one shepherd" (Jn 10, 16).
The anxiety of the Lord Jesus for unity reminds us of the love of the Church Cardinal Mar, and especially to his pastors. As Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, he has worked hard to foster unity among the members of the only college of bishops, gathered around their leader, the Bishop of Rome, not only during the celebrations of the synodal assembly, but also during the long and demanding process of preparation and then the application of Exhortations promulgated by the Holy Father at the request of the Synod Fathers. In this work was tireless, participating in numerous meetings of the Ordinary Council, special, group work and study. In carrying out duties assigned by the Supreme Pontiff, he, following the exhortation of the Apostle Paul announced the word without tiring, he insisted in season and out of season, he warned, encourage through all patience and doctrine (cf. 2 Tim 4, 2). In this demanding work was guided by the ideal of unity of minds and hearts within the Catholic Church, striving to rediscover the beauty of it in fidelity to Jesus Christ and the overcoming of petty divisions. Thus the Bride of Christ can help the ecumenical journey, difficult and demanding towards the visible unity of all Christians, disciples of the same Lord Jesus and, therefore, to shine with more brilliance as a sacrament of unity of all mankind, upset by many disagreements and conflicts.
