? I am talking about engaged members who directly opt-in and are excited about receiving your messages. These members are out there, you just need to know how to draw them in.

First let's dismiss the myth that there are lists of opted-in email address for sale. No one in his or her right mind would knowingly agree to have an email address added to such a list, and since list vendors are selling the same list to multiple parties, anyone on this list will soon abandon their email account or learn to aggressively use the spam button. Sending to a purchased (or rented list) will almost always result in poor delivery and possibly ruin a good sender's reputation.

Here are seven sure fire ways to successfully grow your audience:

Step 1 This is the most critical. Have an easy to use subscribe form that highlights the benefits of being a member of your mailing list.


Step 2 Make sure every message includes a friendly "forward to a friend" invitation. Simply ask your current members to forward your message to friends, family or colleagues who might find interest in your email marketing newsletter or value in your latest offer.

Step 3 Always include links that allow your recipients to share messages across their social networks. Most email marketing software now makes this type of message sharing very simple.

Step 4 Have a link to your subscribe form prominently displayed in all messages, so if someone is forwarded your message, or sees it on a social site, they can easily join your email marketing list.

Step 5 Provide links to your subscribe form on all pages of your website. You may also find other sites that will allow you to add a link to your subscribe form.

Step 6 Share your expertise and the value of your list by posting blog articles and commenting on other people's blogs. Use this technique to drive traffic to your subscribe form.

Step 7 Ask customers who phone-in or visit your retail location if they would like to join your email list.

Growing an email marketing list takes time, and there really are no hidden shortcuts. The process is much like a spider that has to build a massive web to catch one small fly, a marketer must build several webs to pull in a few new members at a time. But over time, as more webs are built, and existing webs are optimized, the numbers will grow faster.
