Growing Calico Plant in Pots

Calico Hearts Plant (Andromischus trigynus) also called as Clam Plant is a small succulent plant and a native of South Africa which consists about fifty species. They are mainly grown for their beautiful foliage which comes from different shapes, colors, and sizes.

The color of its foliage is pale to dark grayish-green, purple-speckled leaves are usually heart-shaped with a wavy margin and waxy tips, hence they're called heart plant. The flowers are white or purple in color.

Growing Calico Heart plant is easy. They can be propagated by leaf, stem cuttings, and seeds.

Being a sun loving plant, Calico Heart thrives best in warm climate during its growing period in a well-drained soil location.

Planting procedures

Mix two equal parts of loam soil and one part sand and crushed brick and fill the pots or containers for planting. Prior to the operations, if seeds are used as planting materials, sow them in pots filled with sandy soil during spring or summer. Slightly cover the seeds with little soil and glass pane or acetate until the seedlings comes out from the soil.

To make the young seedling grow vigorously, thin them down, and transfer to a prepared seed box filled with sandy soil distanced at one inch apart until they're ready for transplanting to a permanent pots.

Once they're big enough , transplant them in permanent pots filled with the soil mix you prepared earlier. Apply liberal amount of water during summer, and only little amount during winter, just enough to moisten the soil.

If you use cuttings as planting materials, simply cut them from the side shoots of the mother plant or from the leaves and laid them out in the seed box filled with sandy soil. Follow the same procedure done in the seed propagation techniques.

Don't water the newly planted cuttings until the soil becomes pretty dry.

Newly established potted plants should be placed in direct sunlight until they're fully grown plants. If you found some new offsets from the mother plant, just pluck them to separate and plant them in your prepared seed box or to your prepared pots filled with soil mix for future planting.

You'll not be short of planting materials by always separating some new offsets in another containers.
