Guitars For Left Handed People

Are you a left-handed person who has tried to play a guitar

? Chances are that the guitar you played was made for a right-handed person. Although a guitar made for the right hand can be played left handed, it may be uncomfortable or awkward. It was not until recent years that the demand for left-handed guitars increased to the point that manufactures began to produce more.

For years left-handed people who play the guitar have had to convert it. They would do this by replacing the bridge and nut for the strings to fit. Some still do this because it is much cheaper, but with an increase in left-handed players the big-name companies are now manufacturing guitars for left-handed players. Gibson, Paul Reed and Rockenbacker are just some of the companies that have increased their production and sales of these guitars. These custom guitars are as simple as a normal guitar, but since they cater to fewer people the left-handed guitars tens to be more expensive.

Most companies that make guitars will take special orders primarily from serious musicians and professional guitar players in the music industry. Having any guitar specially made and ordered can cost a pretty penny. You can, however, find guitars designed for left handers that are made with both six and twelve strings starting for around $300.

You would think that a guitar made for left-handed people would not be hard to find, but if you walk into a local music shop that sells hundred of guitars, chances are you will find that only one or two of those guitars are for a left-handed person. It is only in the last ten years or so that players and musicians started demanding the manufacturing of such guitars, but with the demand still low it is harder to find such a guitar and when you do, it will cost more money.

With the cost of left-handed guitars being so high, many players have stuck to buying right-handed guitars and converting them. Most likely if you are used to playing on a right-handed guitar you would be fine with it. However, when most left handed people who can play try a guitar designed specifically for them, they are amazed at how much more comfortable and natural it feels. When playing a left-handed guitar, you want to make sure that it feels like a part of you. The freeband should rest lightly in your right hand and should not feel like you have to grip it hard. The picking is, of course, done with your left hand, so you should be able to play the strings with a nice, even strum.

If you are left handed and play the guitar or are thinking about learning how to play, it is recommended to get one designed for a left-handed person. It is a lot more comfortable to play an instrument that caters to you. Plus, being left handed is not about adjusting to a right-handed world. All left handers should have the same opportunities and equipment made for them including guitars.
