Symptoms of chronic periodontitis include bleeding gums, receding gums and bad breath. Periodontitis can also be a symptom of another condition that affects other parts of the body. For example, people with diabetes or HIV can be more prone to developing periodontitis.

Treatment for gum disease varies depending on the type and severity of the condition. As mentioned above, gingivitis can be treated with a professional cleaning and proper at-home oral care. More advanced forms of gum disease may require more extensive treatment, such as periodontal surgery. An experienced periodontist can examine your gums and advise the best plan of treatment.
