There is no guarantee that your carrier will stay put in that cargo bay and you don't want the gun moving around inside the carrier. You also want to prevent dust, foul air, and sudden humidity from entering the case and creating problems. When you arrive it's best to let your gun get acclimated gently and opening the case in a controlled environment is the best way to do this.

A case for your handgun is a wise purchase. If you are driving interstate you will be passing through some areas where your concealed carry permit will not be accepted. Not every state has reciprocity on concealed weapons. If you are stopped by police and your handgun is not secured according to that state's laws, there will be consequences. If your handgun is secured in a locked carrying case you will be safely compliant. You can pay a fine, hire a lawyer or buy a hard case. Gun cases save you money in many ways, by ensuring your firearm remains in pristine operating condition.
