Guru-aparadha - The most grievous offense against the holy name

Aparadha means "offense." In Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.21.37 purport written by HDG AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada it is mentioned that while describing the system of protection for the creeper of devotional service, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu especially stressed protection from offenses unto the lotus feet of Vaishnavas. Such offenses are called Vaishnava-aparadha'.

Consequences of Vaishnava aparadha

If one commits Vaishnava-aparadhas, all of his progress in devotional service will be checked. Even though one is very much advanced in devotional service, if he commits offenses at the feet of a Vaishnava, his advancement is all spoiled. It is been described as a mad elephant' offence that enters the fertile garden of spirituality and uproots the precious creepers of devotional service that have sprouted from the seeds of devotion planted by a spiritual master. Therefore one should be very careful about committing offenses at the feet of a Vaishnava.

The most grevious Vaishnava aparadha

The most grievous type of Vaishnava-aparadha is called Guru-aparadha, which refers to offenses at the lotus feet of the spiritual master. Among the 10 offenses related to the chanting of the holy name of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, this Guru-aparadha is considered the most grievous offense.

The third and the most heinous of the 10 offenses against the holy name is To disobey the order of spiritual master and consider him as a ordinary person'. This is exactly what happened in ISKCON worldwide after the physical departure of Srila Prabhupada. His physical departure was constituted by His ritvik-appointed disciples as absence of Prabhupada in their lives and they lay their claim to the Vyasasana. Their main point of contention was tradition and guru-shishya parampara. Yes, if there was a suitable successor He would have named one. Knowing that none existed Srila Prabhupada wished that His beloved ISKCON be run in a board of directors' approach by the GBC with Him still remaining at the helm as the Acharya for the next 10,000 years. This is evident in the July 9th directive and some of His recorded teachings. This coup-de-military action by the GBC was performed in a guerilla style camouflaged take-over thus overthrowing the very man who gave them the gift of Krishna to occupy His position. Little did they even dream what was in store for them. And within a few years the cat was out of the bag. Fallen gurus, shaken disciples and some awakened followers who could sense where the source of this degradation was. One such group of devotees who have awakened to this insight long ago is that of ISKCON Bangalore. Led by the very dynamic President Shriman Madhupandit Dasa who also doubles as a god-brother mentor for sincere souls seeking solace in the shelter of Srila Prabhupada's lotus feet and ably supported by his deputy Shriman Chanchalapathi Dasa and others, ISKCON Bangalore at the Hare Krishna Hill has refused to let some selfish self-appointed gurus bulldoze what Srila Prabhupada created with great effort. Srila Prabhupada continues to remain the Acharya of this center as was his wish and thus has emerged as the Real ISKCON'. It continues to baffle the logic of its detractors by growing to humongous proportions and branching extensively through-out India for they do not understand the open secret of spiritual success.

Prabhupada's mercy is the constant factor for spiritual success, and his disfavor will be the direct cause of fall-down. The former guru-lila has been manifested in the lives of ISKCON Bangalore devotees and the latter is demonstrated by the fact that majority of the original 11 GBC disciples have had highly disgraceful fall-downs and thus the entire scam of Guru-business stands exposed naked. This act of some irresponsible gurvajna hell-raisers has also let deep seated scars in the minds of their cheated-disciples who were taken on a solid ride to nowhere. Some learnt and recovered from this satan'ization of spirituality while others have simply followed their pseudo-gurus to the hell that was specially made for them.

Time is a great teacher for those who learn it the hard-way from their own mistakes. But far intelligent are those who learn from other's mistakes. History of ISKCON has left the cards wide open. It is foolish of our other ISKCON brothers not to learn and repair the damages done and undo the aparadha thrown at the lotus of the very Spiritual master who came to deliver them out of their misery.

We should always be aware of the gross and subtle forms of Guru-aparadha. By delving deeply into the scriptures and understanding both the position of the Vaishnava spiritual master and one's own position, one can avoid Guru-aparadha.
