Guy Fawkes

History knows many rebels who go down in the name of what they believe in

. Guy Fawkes, also known as the Catholic Yorkshire mercenary is one of the most popular and controversial such figures. Born April 13th, 1570, Fawkes was believed to be Catholic and attended the Free School of St.Peters and his early years were fairly uneventful. In 1953 however, Fawkes left England for Flanders, where he joined the Spanish army and become quite popular with the men, finding himself in positions of command often. Fawkes is noted to have become more religious and devoted to the church, while he was here and his people who served with him described him as being calm and virtuous. So what led Fawkes to his actions?

Catholic oppression

Lack of freedom to practice religion or to express religious beliefs

Unjust persecution at the hands of the New England system for a long time

Once Fawkes returned to New England, he is said to have plotted with Thomas Percy, Robert Catesby, Christopher Wright, Everard Digby and Thomas Wintour to blow up the English Parliament on the 5th of November, 1605. Fawkes and his friends rented a cellar under the parliament and Fawkes filled it up with barrels of gunpowder. He was to light them on fire on the night of the 5th, in hopes of killing the King, his heir and other nobles and make a strong statement about the ongoing persecution of the Catholics.

But something went wrong with the plan, it is not certain exactly how the plotters were discovered but there are supposed theories. Some say the plotters did not want to hurt innocent people or other Catholics and discord amongst the group caused some of the plotters to reveal the plans to the King. Others say that a letter written by one of the plotters to a cousin who was due to be in the parliament was intercepted or taken by the receiver to the King, hence revealing the men.

Early on the morning of the 5th of November, the cellar was stormed and Fawkes was tortured brutally to reveal his plans and the others were caught and shot and some were publicly tortured before being hanged. The persecution of the Catholics and suspicion for them increased after this incident and English rules and government did not practice any tolerance for any religions until late 19th century. People still wonder whether Fawkes was a terrorist or just a man trying to prove a point.
