Gynecomastia: Treating The Problem
For as relatively common as it is among men, gynecomastia gets very little talk outside of medical circles
. Perhaps this is because it is a purely cosmetic issue that has very few health effects that are truly serious. Perhaps it is because men are hesitant to talk about a problem that can be as embarrassing as this one. Whatever the reason, it endangers the growth of awareness when there is a problem of this nature that doesn't get the spotlight it deserves. People suffer with the condition without realizing there are treatment options available. If you are one of these people, worry no longer. You do have options.
See a Doctor
It may seem obvious, but your first step should be scheduling an appointment with your primary doctor to discuss the situation. The thing about gynecomastia is there is always an underlying reason for its appearance. Most times, these reasons are somewhat benign in nature. Hormonal disorders-often starting in adolescence-are the most common cause for the excess breast tissue growth. However, it is important for a doctor to run some tests and make sure you aren't suffering from any serious health conditions that could be manifesting in this fashion.
Medications and Drugs
As difficult as it may be to accept, gynecomastia is sometimes brought on by the patient themselves through risky behaviors. Though the links are not well established, sources have pointed to certain antidepressants, HIV medications, alcohol, and marijuana as possible aggravators of the condition. It may be helpful to stop ingesting these substances (under a doctor's supervision) in conjunction with treatment. Anabolic steroids are also implicated in causing the condition.
Helpful Medicine
Medications can also be used to fight the development of gynecomastia, though their effectiveness in getting rid of present breast tissue is a matter of some dispute. These medications, such as tamoxifen, were created with the intention of helping women fight breast cancer. Bodybuilders and others have used them, however, in an attempt to keep estrogen levels under control.
Surgery
The primary method used to defeat gynecomastia is surgical removal. This is typically done through a form of liposuction, with the doctor removing the excess tissue and fat through a suction tube. In particularly bad cases, the surgeon may even choose to remove the gland responsible to prevent further development. This is a step most doctors would prefer to avoid, however, as the safer option is to simply remove the tissue.
