Hair Loss in Women Can Be Caused by Hormonal Changes From Menopause - Is There a Simple Treatment

I

I have been writing articles about Menopause and the effects it can have on the relationships of men and women. Usually the topics have concerned moodiness and other emotional categories. But, recently my wife and I ran into a problem creating a self esteem issue that was more physical. Her once thick and luxurious hair had begun to fall out. It was thinning at an alarming rate. Of course, we thought of every possible reason other than the obvious one that we consider ourselves semi-experts in. Menopause. Or in this case Perimenopause. We write a blog on this subject and still this answer did not jump out at us. In fact, if this has happened to you and you tried to research it, you would probably find that thinning hair is most often caused by thyroid dysfunction. This is what my wife jumped on and simply would not let go of. If you read the symptoms of a problematic thyroid, then you would be amazed to see how the symptoms match nearly identically those of perimonopause and menopause.

We had found a doctor (woman) who had helped us with many of my wife's obvious menopausal issues, weight gain, moodiness, depression, anxiety etc. But it was only recently that the two of them talked about the thinning hair. Blood tests and other factors ruled out thyroid, so what could it be? This doctor immediately came up with iron deficiency. My wife's periods had become much worse over the last few years. Lasting longer and excessive bleeding. Which would certainly contribute to iron deficiency. Iron is carried to your system through your blood. She did not say this was the cause, but she did recommend Iron supplements

This was an inexpensive and non prescription remedy, if it worked. The doctor warned that, due to the speed of hair growth, that it could be take many months to see a difference. But it was a serious issue, so we began an iron regime immediately. Within a month my wife could see a difference...in her hair brush. Soon, I could even see the difference, on her head. Her hair was absolutely growing back more normally.

She later ran out of Iron Supplement pills and just kept forgetting to buy more for over 3 weeks. The hair loss began again. We bought more Iron Supplements and soon we saw positive results again. This seemed like proof to us, so now we need to tell you. Just try it. Or, see your doctor first and tell her or him what you have just read. At any rate it is one happy ending story in the pursuit of a normal life during menopause and I am glad to share it with you.

By the way, after going over my wife's blood tests this same doctor also, told her to take vitamin D, because she saw a deficiency in the results. We get vitamin D from the sun and it helps our skin, but most importantly Vitamin D deficiency can cause chronic fatigue and moodiness. These are, of course, symptoms of Perimenopause and Menopause. There is no way to know if the combination of the two supplements helped to stopping thinning hair, or if each just did the job intended.

If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms, I just don't see how these supplements could hurt. They are over the counter and are included in all multi vitamins. Check with your doctor if you have doubts, or give them a try and then report the results to your doctor. The Iron supplement comes in several strengths. Your pharmacist may be able to help you in recommending what strength would be best to try first.
