A diabetic hamster will have all or few of the below symptoms:
* Increased hunger.
* Increased thirst, drinking so much.
* Sudden weight loss or weight gain.
* Peeing excessively, strong smelly urine with either a sweetish smell or a acetone.
* Tiredness or excessive exercise or a combination of both at the edge.
* Irritability, unusual biting when the hamster did not bite before.
To look your hamster:
* Purchase Keto-Diastix.
* Dip the test strip into fresh pee.
* Wait for results.
* Compare results to chart on Keto-Diastix package.
* Check package in details to prevent wrong results.
The following is a short guideline on how to treat diabetic hamsters.
* Use with a hypoglycemic such as fenugreek seeds/powder-up to 400 mg or 25 seeds is safe. Use 50/50 Pedialyte/Water solution in water bottle. High protein, high fiber, low fat diet.
* Treat with 50/50 Pedialyte/Water solution and high protein, high fiber, low fat diet.
* Give with only hypoglycemics, plain water, and absolutely NO SUGAR. High protein, low fat, high fiber diet. Hypoglycemics include fenugreek, glipizide, buckwheat.
Good protein foods for hamster:
* Roasted soybeans, without salt.
* Chicken baby food.
* Tofu (firm or medium firm is best)
* Spirulina and/or seaweed called NORI (roasted laver, unsalted).
* Low fat cheeses.
* Low fat, plain yogurt.
* Boiled chicken breast or turkey.
* Egg whites with tiny bit of cooked egg yolk, boiled, scrambled, fried in small amount of olive oil.
* Flax seed.
* Tuna in water, drained (not all hamsters like this)
Yeast is another high protein eats that hamster should be provided. Yeast help reduce stress for hamsters so it is highly recommended to give your hamsters one tablet of yeast every week.
Good veggies for diabetic hamsters:
Cucumbers, bok choy, romaine lettuce, brocolli, cauliflower, celery, kale, bitter melon,chinese brocolli, red peppers, green peppers, beans (except red kidney), legumes, regular mushrooms.
Other foods:
Wheatgerm, Weetabix cereal, any no sugar cereal, nutritional yeast. whole grains, multi grain bread, brown rice, whole grain pasta, buckwheat pasta.
In moderation:
Sunflower seeds, pepitas, pumpkin seeds, nuts.
Prevent:
Raisins, corn, sugars, fruit, red kidney beans, parsley, brussel sprouts, bean sprouts,
sprouts of any kind actually, onions, garlic, citrus fruits, carrots, potatoes, white rice, white bread.

* Keep away any exercise activities from his cage.
* Keep away any extra multi-levels so that his cage is all on one level and try to find a balance between minimising the size of the cage and not making him too bored.
* Make sure he has extra area to make him comfortable when sleeping.
* Try adding more calcium to his eats by adding pieces of milk soaked bread and/or pieces of high calcium dog biscuits to his food. This will help his bones heal quicker due to the extra calcium in his diet.
