For the elegant cozy feel

For the elegant cozy feel

If you are fond of French country dcor, then deck up your home in that elegant style using the hand hewn beams. The hand hewn beams have that warm feel about themselves which make the interiors very cozy. You can build your own hand hewn beams at home using foam insulation board and by covering them with lightweight spackle.

Elegance at a price

You can source the best hand hewn beams from Europe. They have a lot of antiques which are a perfect fit if you are willing to lend that decorative look to your interiors. But do remember that such luxury comes in lieu of a hefty sum of money as you will need to pay the contractor too for installation of the beams.

Faux hand hewn beams

You can achieve the decorator look in your interiors even without spending a fortune. But only if you are ready to build faux beams at home. This is the best inexpensive alternative available. For any installation helps, you can easily ask for a favor from any family member or a friend. However, remember this that these beams are mainly for show and arent really sturdy enough to support other structures.

Build hand hewn beams at home

For building these faux beams you will need a sheet of thick foam insulation board, a bucket of paint or lightweight spackle, measuring tape, pencil, marker, toothpicks, liquid nails, clear glaze, rags and cloths.

Draw out lines on the board and cut them using electric knife to make the beam pieces. Butt them together with toothpicks and adhesive and form a U shaped structure. Fit Styrofoam pieces in between for extra stability and let the adhesive dry overnight.

For that hand sculpt effect use your electric knife for serrations or waves along the beam edges and then sand off the rough surfaces. Mix little water to the spackle and add a grained woody texture on the beam with it by combing with a bristle brush. Dry it completely before adding primer.

To enhance the look of your faux beams apply clear glaze. Now, for the installation purpose make use of adhesive and poles to fit it on the ceiling.
