Hand Luggage Charges

One of the most well known budget airlines has been revealed this week that it may have been charging passengers thousands of pounds unfairly.

Customers of BMIBaby have been asked routinely over the last twelve months to put their hand luggage into a metal box to gauge whether it was small enough to take on the flight, and charged an excess baggage fee for if their bag was too big.

It has subsequently nee revealed that many of the gauges had been made to be smaller than the measurements provided on the website, and the gauges next to the main check in at the airport.

The airline has admitted the problem occurs in all the gauges in the inner airports in the uk, and this had called to light the problem with other airlines. Most airlines give bonuses to staff for the amount of oversized baggage they can charge customers for, and it is confusing to customers as each airline has different specifications.

It seems that the airline have known about the problem for a while, but it was highlighted by an irate businessman who was charged to check his bag at Luton, but when he got to Amsterdam he put his bag in the gauge again and found it to fit with plenty of room. Watchdogs say the company should reimburse customers who have experienced this problem, but it insisted that very few customers had actually complained about the issue.

The airline have declined to comment on how much they have made from the additional banking charges, but the other three major low cost airlines, Ryan Air, Easyjet and Flybe have announced that they have checked their gauges and found them to be fine.
