, is legally authorizing private citizens to carry a handgun in public in a hidden manner. This also holds true for other states in the country, either on the person or in close proximity to the person. It is sufficient in some states to be a resident or a permanent resident in order to carry concealed weapons. Under the current federal legal precedent, it is a right that is protected by the Second Amendment of the United States to be able to carry a weapon. Even though that same amendment gives states permission to outlaw this right, only two states have done so. As you can see, different states have many different requirements, and Alabama is no exception.

Some states restrict this right to carry concealed weapons by limiting the right to a single hand gun, but other states do permit multiple ones or even martial arts weapons to be carried. Alabama is a "May Issue" state, which means that authorities can issue a permit to carry a firearm but are under no legal obligation to do so. First of all, you have to be at least 18 years old and a resident of the state. However, it is up to the discretion of the county sheriff to set the minimum age limit higher. You will need to fill out a CCW application at the local county Sheriff's Office. If they go ahead and grant you a permit it is only good for up to one year from the date that it is issued. An applicant for concealed weapons in Alabama has to have a good reason for carrying a firearm, but is thought that in practice, the permit is granted to anyone who qualifies. What may be surprising to many people in the state (and in the country) is that it is not required to run a background check for the permits, although most counties do. For this reason, the state's CCW permit cannot serve as a National Instant Criminal System check, or NICS check.

Applicants will need to provide photo identification and some other ones that are specifically required by your county. Make sure that you are aware of the requirements of your specific county; some require training and others do not, and the fee that is required of applicants to pay is something else that varies according to county. One thing you must know is that only law enforcement officials are allowed to carry a pistol into a public school or within 1,000 feet of demonstrations. Also, you will always immediately be required to present your Alabama Concealed Weapons permit to an official upon request.
