Handy tips for driving in fog this winter

Driving in wintery conditions throws up many problems and situations that you must deal with on a day to day basis. One of the biggest problems in winter is often fog in the morning.

Fog is commonly caused by cold temperatures meeting an area of warmer temperatures, causing the air to saturate. This often occurs in the morning and clears up before lunchtime however in some cases it can last much longer. It is all down to local atmospheric conditions. One thing that is for certain is that fog makes driving conditions worsen significantly.

Although driving in fog is difficult and presents risks to yourself and others around, there are a few tips which could help you drive safer in foggy conditions. The first thing to note is the simplest, yet the most useful. Slow down because in foggy conditions your field of vision is decreased and this will affect your reaction time by giving you a shorter stopping distance if you do suddenly need to stop. This seems like an obvious thing to do but is often forgotten by many drivers in a rush on their way to and from work.

While driving in these foggy conditions, trying to enhance your view of the road is what you would always wish to do. One of the biggest temptations would be to switch on the full beam lights. Contrary to what you would think, this often deepens the fog. It is best to stick with dipped headlights which will light up the immediate road in front of you. This prevents your front facing full beam lights from reducing your vision even further. Of course if you have a set of fog lights, then these are particularly useful when fog is at its thickest.

One further tip would be to use your footbrake regularly to notify cars behind you of your presence which they may be un-aware of when following in restricted conditions. The bottom line would always be when driving in foggy conditions to try and delay your journey. If you can avoid your journey and take it later on in the day then do so. With modern working hours becoming more and more flexible it may be possible to stay at home while the fog lifts, allowing you to get on with a few chores safely in your home before heading safely out to work.
