Handyman: Tips On Hiring A Good One
The only tough part for you is getting the right handyman
. Here are some tips to help you find the right professional for the job.
Getting Started Finding Your Handyman
The best way to find a good handyman service is to go with a referral. Friends, family members, co-workers, neighbors and acquaintances can give you names. If they've had work done by a good professional and were happy with the work, they'll be happy to spread the word.
You can also look in the yellow pages or online for services in your area. Once you've got some names, call them and explain the work you need done. If they offer a few ideas of their own, that's a good sign. They should be easy to talk to and knowledgeable. Be sure to ask them if there's a waiting list, and when you can expect them to come.
Pick the best-sounding few and arrange consultations. The consultation is no-commitment. Just have them come out, see the work that needs to be done and give you an estimate. Have a couple of consultations and pick the one that's best.
How To Avoid Dodgy Handyman Services
It's a well known fact that there are some less than ethical people out there fixing things for folks' hard earned money. There are a few ways to make sure you're getting somebody who's qualified and professional.
First, make sure that they're right for the job. Most jobs are in the yard, bathroom or kitchen. Make sure they've got experience in that area. A yard worker can't fix your sink and a painter can't rewire your house. If they scratch their head and say, "Well... I think I could do it..." try somebody else. They should have the right experience and tools.
To make sure you're not hiring an ex-con or criminal mastermind, get references. Ask for three, and follow up on them. Also, check with the Better Business Bureau. They'll tell you if there's ever been a complaint against this individual, and if they've screwed anybody over, there will be! These service companies are generally more trustworthy, but sometimes the flexibility of an individual contractor is a plus.
Also, make sure they've got liability insurance and workers' compensation. If they get hurt on your property and don't have it, you'll have to pay!
Finally, don't discriminate. There are lots of great handywomen out there too! Hiring a handyman (or handywoman) isn't so tough; get somebody good and professional, and you're work will be done.
