Hard disk was invented in 1950s. It was then 20 inches and had small megabytes. Hard disk is also known as Fixed Disk as well. Hard Disk consists of a hard platter that holds the magnetic medium, and plastic film in tapes and floppies. Hard disk works as tape recorder. The difference is a magnetic storage. The magnetic medium is erasable and rewriteable.

Capacity and Performance:

Hard disk capacity is between 10 to 40 gigabytes or even more. Data are stored into the disk in the form of files. File simply consists of bytes. When a program is running on the computer, the hard disk retrieves the bytes and sends them to the CPU. The data rate is between 5 and 40 megabytes per second. This is called Data Rate. When CPU asks for a file and when the first file is sent from the Hard Disk to the CPU is known as Seek time. The time limit is 10 and 20 milliseconds.

Hard Disk Failure:

a)Firmware corruption- Hard disk firmware is the software code in Hard disk. If the Hard Disk is not readable that means the firmware of the hard disk has corrupted. It is recoverable, if the hard disk has been repaired or reprogrammed.

b)Electronic failure- It depends on the controller board of the Hard Disk. May be a power fault or thunder storm can also cause this problem. The Hard Disk will be undetectable.

c)Mechanical failure- it will happen when the other part of the computer which are related to the Hard Disk has become bad. It will do a clicking sound as soon as the computer is turning on. The Hard Disk will be inaccessible.

d)Logical Error- It could be the problem with the files that are loaded in the hard disk. It could be the Operating system related files or the program files.

b)Changing the Hard Disk can resolve the issue.

c)Reloading O/S will resolve the issue.
