Harness The Healing Power Of Aromatherapy
While I was living in a college dorm, all residents were restricted from burning candles or incense of any kind
. The reasons for these limitations were strictly practical--after all, college students are busy and forgetful, and the last thing we needed was for the whole dorm to burn down.
But while I was there, I certainly noticed that I missed the permeating scents of my favorite candles which my mother kept burning in our home. As it turns out, appealing scents are not only pleasant, but they have tremendous powers to heal, rejuvenate, and ease tension and nerves.
First of all, if you are going to harness the power of aromatherapy, you need to spend some time determining what scents you like best and how they make you feel.
This involves checking out local shops that sell essential oils, candles, and wax melts and honestly taking the time to determine if particular aromas help you feel relaxed, energized, etc.
Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways. They can be rubbed onto your vital pulse points in order to use the heat of your body to intensify the smell, allowing you to "carry," the scent wherever you go--just like perfume.
If you have a difficult time releasing stress before going to sleep, try using soothing scents--such as lavender--on your pillow or in your bedroom to improve your ability to fall asleep. During hectic periods of the day, you may find solace in breathing in aromas from an oil-treated handkerchief.
For headaches or periods of rest and relaxation, you may find it helpful to use either a warm or cold compress which has been infused with your favorite essential oils. It is acceptable to blend aromas in order to maximize the desirable properties of each.
Beyond the simple use of essential oils, you should take advantage of burning oils in your home. There are two varieties of oil warmers: those powered electrically and others fueled by a votive candle burning underneath it.
The electric burners naturally tend to be more expensive upfront, but you do not have to go to the expense of continually buying new votives and then lighting them.
Warmed oil tends to permeate an area better than a candle, so if you are not looking for a strong scent, this may not be the best option for you. However, most oil warmers can also melt wax cubes, which are a little milder.
Aromatherapy can be a wonderful healing force if you know how to use it. Take the time to find which scents are most soothing to you, and then decide how best to allow them to permeate your day-to-day life.
