The Harrier is a small-to-medium dog that belongs to the Scent hound family and originated in Great Britain. This breed has an average size between 50-60 pounds in weight, 19-21 inches in height.
Coat
The Harrier has a short, dense, and glossy coat. This average shedder has finer hairs on the ears than on their body. Commonly seen coat colors are black, white, red and white, white and tan, tan and white, black and tan, and, lemon and white.
Activity
The Harrier is in need of exercise on a daily basis including long intensive runs or walks. They should be allowed to play in open space as this is a form of a fun and easy exercise. If they are not given enough exercise, this breed can become hyper vigilant, obese, and/or vicious. Bred to work and run all-day, this breed is unhappy with a sedentary lifestyle.
Temperament
The Harrier is generally more sociable and playful than the Foxhound. They are known to be good with older children, and are generally friendly to all. Their hunting instincts explain their love to sniff and trail. Their origin as a working pack dog makes them great with other dogs, but ensure that they are supervised at all times if they are around other small pets. This breed requires and does best with daily exercise, which is beneficial to keep them from being lazy, overweight, and restless.

The Harrier breed originated in England and was developed during the 13th century. Not only were they developed to hunt hare, they were also used to hunt rabbit and fox.
Care
Requiring minimal care, the Harrier only needs brushing and combing regularly to remove dead hair. They are average shedders and require their ears to be regularly cleaned, and nails trimmed. They require brisk long walks daily, and other forms of activities such as playing in the yard to ensure they are provided with sufficient exercise daily.
Training
The Harrier is known to have a stubborn and independent nature. Due to this fact, obedience is highly recommended to begin as young puppies. This breed is rarely seen in obedience events, although they are able to do it, only, it will require a lot of time and effort on the owners.
Harriers are best with owners that are not looking for companion dogs. These dogs love their owner's attention, but never rely on their masters to be happy. Due to this, they tend to cause mischief for entertainment. They are not suggested for inexperienced dog owners as the biggest issue for this breed is their dominance. The Harrier loves food, and tends to counter surf. They are also known to have the fascination to dig due to the fact that they might find it entertaining, and mainly because they want to search for some critters underground.
Character
The Harrier dog is known to have a pleasant and excellent disposition. They are a great breed for families with older children. As working pack dog, these dogs do not like to be left alone, and as a hunting dog, they need to spend time outdoors and engage in physical activities.
