Most of the time all the person with Hashimotos knows regarding their condition is that a result from a blood test has proven that they have this auto-immune condition known as Hashimotos Thyroiditis. They may have heard the words antibodies and TPO or Thyroglobulin, but that's usually about all.
Each one of us has antibodies to this protein, Thyroglobulin,and an enzyme, Thyroglobulin,because everyone's thyroid cells are recycled with some degree of apoptosis or cell death. And when these thyroid cells die their contents are released, and when they do, antibodies are formed specifically for this enzyme and protein.
The important point to understand is that someone with Hashimotos has a faster rate of thyroid cell death, thus releasing greater quantities of this protein and enzyme, thus causing higher antibody levels.
The increased rate of thyroid cell death is primarily due to thyroid inflammation. Any form of inflammation accelerates the metabolism of cells and causes pre-mature aging. One approach to treating Hashimotos is to decrease this inflammation by using a thyroid hormone prescription which is often necessary. Yet when it comes to Hashimotos all thyroid medication are not created equal.
Very often a person with Hashimotos is prescribed a thyroid medication as their only treatment. Even though this is important, a more holistic approach is often necessary for fully reducing thyroid inflammation. Most often the medication preferred by physicians treating Hashimotos is Synthroid or L-thyroxine yet sometimes a prescription will be written for Armour or another desiccated thyroid tissue such as Naturthroid.
Yet it is a mistake to use a desiccated thyroid glandular prescription. I will say up front that this admonition cannot be found anywhere in medical research. Rather it is from my own clincial experience as well as from what is simply common sense. Let me explain.
Remember, the reason why a person has increased antibodies is because the content of their thyroid cells is leaking Thyroperoxidase and Thyroglobulin into the tissues around their thyroid which activates their immune system.
Now, Armour Thyroid is manufactured from the thyroid gland of a pig and their cells are almost identical to our own thyroid cells. The thyroid cells of pigs contain thyroid hormones as well as all the other ingredients found in human thyroid tissue including Thyroperoxidase and Thyroglobulin. When we ingest pig thyroid cells they are digested by the hydrochloric acid in the stomach and thyroid hormones are released.
But also this enzyme and protine are also released to some extent are absorbed through our gastrointestinal lining.
By now I think you know where we are going because when this enzyme and protein enter into our blood stream they will cause an activation and increased production of the corresponding antibodies.
Given my avoidance of Armour there are a couple of other possibilities for a prescription. One is to use Synthroid or Levothyroxine which are quite similar to the primary hormone produced by our thyroid called thyroxine or T4. This can help yet our thyroid produces other hormones including T3 or tri-iodothyronine. This hormone is actually the primary hormone that turns on our metabolism or energy production.
The T4 in Synthroid is also converted into T3 yet many people taking Synthroid can't convert T4 into T3 all that well and end up with low thyroid hormone symptoms because of it.
One simple solution for people taking Synthroid is to have their physicians add ona prescription of Cytomel which is T3. This can help a lot.
They can also have their physician write a prescription for a compounded T4 and T3 which is made by a compounding pharmacist. The ingredients of the hormones are the same as Synthroid and Cytomel.
The principle advantage of using the compounded T4 and T3 is that the compounding pharmacy can use hypoallergenic fillers. Sometimes people can be sensitive or allergic to the fillers and binders found in the compressed tablets of Synthroid and Cytomel.
