Have a Great Time in Costa Rica

The main city, San Jose, is where most visitors will arrive and spend a while before heading to the beaches or touring other bits of the country. San Jose is a large, chic town, with accommodations for all budgets, and many great cafes, shopping and nightlife.

The town is also loaded in cultural attractions like museums, theatre and art studios. The Jade Museum, ( Museo de Jade ) can be discovered on the eleventh floor of the Instituto Nacional de Seguros building, and exhibits the world's biggest collection of American jade.

This much cherished mineral, with its spread of colours, has added desirability due to its scantiness, with only 6 known quarries in the world.

The expertise of each precious stone on show is delightful, and the assorted archeological exhibits of ceramic and stonework give a genuine understanding of Costa Rica's pre-Columbian cultures. Between Avenida Central and Avenida one is the nation's Museum ( Museo Nacional ).

This fascinating museum occupies the old Bellavista military Barracks, and visitors can still see bullet holes on the south wall going back to the 1948 civil war. Within the building is a glorious archeology section, and the history section gives a graphic account of the virtual extinction of the native folks. Together with San Jose's entrancing museums, another attraction that's easily worth a visit is the nation's Theatre ( Teatro Nacional ). This is perhaps Costa Rica's most interesting and inspiring public building, and visitors will be shocked at the marble, gilding and finely detailed glasswork that enhances the frescoes and murals. The building alone is worth seeing, however the theater also stages glorious performances for visitors and neighbors alike to enjoy. After exploring the historic and instructional side of the town, the Central Market offers an exciting and colourful shopping experience, and an energetic insight into Costa Rican life. Busy and loud, the market sells a spread of products like veggies, fruit, flowers, cheese, leather products, gifts and keepsakes, and even live turkeys! Outside the town, Costa Rica provides many phenomenal options for sight-seeing, relaxation, and excitement. One of the most well liked areas to visit is the Arenal State Park area in the North Sector . The small city of Fortuna is employed principally as a base from which to explore the encompassing area, and offers accommodations, restaurants and many tour operators for people that would like to take arranged tours, walks or horseback rides, or who also need info and help. The impressive Arenal Volcano is sat in its prime location overlooking the area, and provides fantastic night viewing, with glowing lava flows and red hot rocks being spewed from the crater. Arenal Volcano is Costa Rica's most active volcano exploding on a virtually daily basis. It is hazardous to walk anywhere close to the peak, but there are good perspectives both night and day from the lower slopes, and from close by resorts and attractions. The Tabacon Hot Springs offer a fantastic view of the volcano while visitors soak in the hot, naturally heated pools full of advantageous minerals.

This unruffled, pretty place offers 8 pools of varying temperatures, the biggest of that has a water slide and even a swim up bar! There are a few waterfalls, and massages are available on request. After passing some time relaxing at Tabacon, close by La Catarata de Fortuna is a monumental waterfall that's reached by a three mile mud road, and leads to a lookout point where a second waterfall can be seen. The 2 waterfalls are particularly impressive and cascade thru the rocks and forest, though it's a muddy scramble to basically reach them and swim in their cool waters. Next to Arenal State Park is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. This is a spellbinding, lush green place that's enormously popular with visitors and offers incredible wildlife viewing and bird watching. The Reserve straddles the continental divide, and the recreational pursuits here are unlimited. From the wonderful zip line and cover tours that provide extraordinary views of the wildlife and birds, to authentic coffee plantation tours, pony trekking and hiking, to wildlife viewing from postponed bridges high in the rainforest, Monteverde is a place quite unlike any other, and mustn't be missed when visiting Costa Rica.
