If you have accidentally re-partitioned your NTFS hard drive, then you will not be able to access stored files from the NTFS partition. Though you are not be able to access the files, you can still restore it with the help of a NTFS partition recovery software. Re-partitioning is not only the way of losing data from partition. Some of the other aspects like formatting the partition, corruption and deletion of partitions can also cause data loss. Losing data from formatting or deletion of partition is more accidental in nature, whereas partition corruption can be caused due to software malfunction or improper shut down of the system or due to logical causes.
You can easily restore data from all these data loss situations as long as the data is present in the hard drive. Once the data is overwritten, lost data recovery is not possible. Over writing happens when you perform read or writes operation, or if you try to install any recovery software on the drive from which you have lost data. If you want to make sure that the lost/deleted data is safe you should stop using the NTFS hard drive till you successfully restore data from it. You should not restart the hard drive as this could also lead to permanent data loss.
