Hazards Of Social Networking

Now that the net has been with us for a considerable amount of time

, there has been a substantial growth of social networking sites.

Because of their growth, and the amount of time they have been with us, we aren't as guarded and secure when publicly or openly sharing information. Sharing personal information went from being unachievable, to bizarre, to common place.

Whether you're a small kid growing up and are unaware of what it's like to live in a world sans social media or you're an adult who over time has become accustomed to it, it's necessary to keep your guard up against sharing too much and arming those who mean to take advantage of you.

The first danger lies is identity theft. In the year 2002, Canadians reported 7,629 incidents of identity theft to the PhoneBusters National Call center. Also a financial loss in excess of three million dollars. These issues are present in real life and the trouble is quite a bit. Keep this trouble away by using strong passwords that comprise of letters & numbers, & don't make it something much obvious that people could guess. Like your middle name & your birthday. It's a very good idea to change your passwords often too.

Also, be cautious of giving away personal information in usernames or e mail addresses. Most importantly, be aware of e-mail scams! Under the clever disguise of EBay and other popular registered sites, fraudsters run and operate sites that send out mass e-mails asking users to update their personal information, & then use this information to hack in to their accounts. These registered sites will never ask you to give them information and details that you have already provided. If you come across an e-mail from an address that you don't recognize asking you for information, delete it, & definitely don't comply!

Sites such as Facebook are the places where people often share the most information. They do so without thinking about the consequences or the after effects. Conversations get casual and unsecured. However, there always are the prowlers and crooks who would give anything to read a status update that indicates when you and your family are going away on holiday. It's easy to discover a public event you're hosting to learn your address. Why not make things easy for them and tell them the combination to the alarm system and the safe? The rule of thumb is not to share information publicly that you wouldn't share with a robber.

Finally, there are organizations and institutions exclusively dedicated to knowing about buying behaviors by creeping onto social networking sites and trying to learn what they can about your shopping habits. It's invasive, but because the people sharing such information on the site are informing their friends, and aren't being asked directly by the companies themselves, the data is reliable.

As a result, companies won't stop this invasion of privacy anytime soon.

Social networking sites are fun, useful, & they're too attractive to ignore. They don't have to bother you in the event you exercise caution, common sense, & in general you're thoughtful while sharing information. Keep in mind; don't share anything publicly over the net in the event you wouldn't inform it to a person looking to rob you!
