Hazards in Confined-Spaces and the Solutions
There are many workplaces which consist of confined spaces and it is one of the most dangerous sites which can hinder the safety and health of workers
. The fact is that these confined spaces have restricted or limited means of entry and exit. These spaces are basically not designed for continuous working, nor can workers work there for a long time with the unfavorable natural ventilation. With small layouts or openings, entering or exiting can be difficult, and in times of emergency it can complicate rescue procedures. Some of the confined spaces found in a work place are tanks, boilers, vats, sewers, manure pits, pipelines, manholes and storage bins.
Some of the main hazards found in confined spaces will be widely discussed here. A confined space may contain a hazardous atmosphere. The atmosphere in confined spaces are extremely hazardous due to the lack of natural air movement. This results in flammable atmospheres, toxic atmospheres and oxygen deficient atmospheres. A confined space may contain too little or too much oxygen, which may result in making the space flammable or toxic. Recently, OSHA cited Thermal Polymer Systems LC of Angleton in Texas. One worker died and two others were injured when the ventilation system did not remove the toxic and flammable vapors of the primer. The atmosphere was becoming toxic and inflammable and it posed a greater risk for the workers inside the space.
Again these spaces may also contain physical hazards that result in workers falling, being crushed, buried or drowned. The physical hazards like unstable solids, which are made of small particles like grain and sand stored in enclosures can be dangerous if workers get trap or buried in it. Workers may also slip, get trapped or fall during an operation. Being in these kind of spaces will make the rescue operation more difficult.
The main solution would be that these confined spaces should be carefully assessed by an expert and every hazard should be identified. Workers should also be trained in
OSHA safety training programs, which discuss a wide range of issues on the types of hazards in confined spaces. You will also learn about the preventive measures to tackle this problem in these OSHA safety trainings.
Working in these kinds of spaces can pose a lot of risks for the workers due to the hazards associated with it. Unless workers are provided with proper
OSHA trainings, procedures and equipment, they must not be allowed to enter a confined space.
