Headache Causes, Remedies and Prevention

The natural health research team at Institute for VibrantLiving (IVL) continues its investigation into the causes of - and natural remedies for -the common headache. Here is their latest report:

Usually, headaches are accepted as a fact of life, a blip in an otherwise healthy life of an adult or teen, and are thought to be brought on by stress, tiredness, eyestrain, excessive drinking, smoking, partying, etc.

However, a recent study of headaches involving teenagers and their lifestyles may have important implications for adults in regards to the factors involved in their lifestyles that may actually encourage the frequency of headaches.

Causes of Headaches Probed

New studies are showing that teenagers with unhealthy lifestyles are 3.4 times more likely to suffer frequent headaches than their contemporaries who enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

The study was part of the Nord-Trndelaghealth study which involved 5,847 Norwegian students aged 13 to 18. The participants were interviewed by nurses about headaches, along with having their height and weight measurements recorded to calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI).

They also provided detailed information about their physical activity and smoking habits.

The results revealed that 21% of boys and 36% of girls reported having recurrent headaches in the past 12 months. These percentages were significantly higher in the group which was comprised of overweight smokers who did not exercise.

The results were published in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

It was found that 55% of teenage smokers, who were overweight and did not take part in regular exercise had regular headaches, compared to just 25% of teenagers in the study group who had none of those negative health factors.

The study broke down the results even further and showed that:

Overweight teenagers were 40% more likely to suffer frequent headaches.

Teenagers that smoked were 50% more likely to suffer headaches.

Students who did not exercise were 20% more likely to suffer headaches, compared to their healthier counterparts.

Those who had all three negative health factors were three times more likely to suffer recurrent headaches.

Those who had two of the three negative factors (overweight, smoking and no exercise) almost doubled the likelihood of getting frequent headaches.

The author and leader of this study, Dr John-Anker Zwart, at the University of Oslo concluded that the treatment and prevention of headaches in teenagers should include addressing wider health issues - including stopping smoking, embracing a healthy diet and introducing regular exercise.

He saw the study as "A vital step toward a better understanding of lifestyle factors and potential preventive measures that can be taken."

Headache Remedies Explored

Currently, the treatment of headaches in teenagers and adults range from acetaminophen-based painkillers (such as Tylenol and simple analgesics), to self-hypnosis, massage therapy and avoiding certain foods known to trigger migraines - such as caffeine, cheese, chocolate and strawberries.

Not the best or the most popular choices when it comes to lifestyle changes.

A natural alternative to these commonly-used headache relievers is Pain & Brain, from the Institute for Vibrant Living (IVL). It contains natural anti-inflammatories such as curcumin -to attack pain at it's source - and is easier on the stomach than aspirin and analgesics.

In the long term, addressing unhealthy lifestyles, in both adults and teens, may be the most beneficial approach when it comes to preventing headaches rather than just dealing with the symptoms.

For all ages, the best advice gleaned from this study is to:

Quit or greatly reduce smoking (tobacco or otherwise)

Get some form of regular exercise (even a 10-minute brisk walk a day can be of measurable value)

Watch your diet. (Excessive sweets and not enough liquids such as water or juice isthe commonculprit here.)

Watch your weight! (Tip-Start withquitting sodas. That alone is a valuable way to greatly reduce sugar intake and "empty calories")
