Healing Energies; Mending Bones With Electricity

Ever since Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla first revolutionized how we use electricity

, the citizens of the world have been constantly evolving the different ways we can harness this power. From powering up backup generator in the event of a blackout to giving movement to electric cars the uses of this energy are being constantly challenged as new minds are put on the scene. But through recent studies and breakthroughs in science and medicine, yet another possibility for this energy can be added to the list.

Scientist began to notice a curious thing when they introduced electricity into bones that exhibit signs of a fracture. A doctor will apply a small amount of electricity through a process called electrical stimulation via capacitive coupling. Say that five times fast. What this breaks down to is two electrodes being placed on the skin near the broken bone. A nine volt battery is then used to power these electrodes and a current of electricity is passed between the two points. The person who is afflicted with the broken bone will generally feel nothing more than a slight buzz, if anything, but the effects it has on the healing process are in fact much more noticeable.

This passage of electricity promotes healing by enticing the cells of the broken bone to reproduce and replicate at a much faster level than normal. Other effects of electricity have been noted as occurring within the broken bone but the acceleration of bone cells through these means is the most notable.

To speed up recovery, the electrodes are placed on the patient's body and are worn all day. The batter that powers these two objects is usually applied near these two electrodes and it too is carried by the individual and then recharged at night time.

The use of capacitive coupling has seen its greatest effect in people who have non-healing bones or bones that break and exhibit no signs of repairing on their own. This event happens most notably in older generations and individuals with mineral deficiencies or diseases which cause an atrophy in the healing process.

While this breakthrough has shown wonders for patients in these mentioned demographics, the downfall to capacitive coupling is that is has in fact shown no signs of speedy up the healing process in individuals who exhibit a perfectly healthy and normal bone and healing system.

What this essentially comes down to is that the option for bone mending via capacitive coupling is generally only a wise option for patients of an older age. If the patient is younger and otherwise normally healthy, electrical bone mending will generally not aid in the healing process. In this case, a patient's body's natural healing regimen will be best suited for the job.

So far, there has also been no concrete evidence that electrical therapy can have any positive effect on patients with osteoporosis. Leading scientist in this field are still developing new technologies and treatments to aid in patients with osteoporosis. As it stands now, any large breakthrough in this area is still about three or four years out.
