Health and safety in the UK receives a fair amount of stick because it seems to have gathered a lot of power in the work place

. But this does not detract from the fact that with the stress put on safe working conditions the accident rate and the man hours lost to industrial accidents is maintained at a low rate.

Productivity experts often vilify the safety officers as they reckon that their message detracts from people doing their work efficiently. That is as may be. The truth of the matter is that people in the workplace do not naturally think about safety issues and are usually more concerned with getting their job done. It has been shown that in uncontrolled environments accidents occur far more frequently than in environments that emphasize safety, insist on the workforce being trained to do their tasks correctly and safely. In addition it has been shown that despite a lot of lip service paid to the measures it always works best when one individual or department is a dedicated safety officer whose job it is to identify hazards as and when they occur and to take action to either eliminate such hazards or to draw people's attention to it and to install systems to safely work around such a danger.

The next thing is that the message is quickly forgotten. Sure one can install a safety system and get everyone trained in a safe way of working, but the worker soon forgets. If attention is not kept focussed on the procedures then pretty soon less that safe practices start to appear and pretty soon an accident will occur.

So as far as safety goes one has to identify potential hazards in the workplace, develop procedures to work safely in that environment, train everybody in the procedure, keep attention drawn to the safety aspects of the work and keep someone responsible for ensuring that the procedures are adhered to and that any potential future hazards are timeously identified and dealt with.

The same is absolutely true of fire hazards. fire safety is again not something that the workers in a factory or on a construction site, for example, will think much about. But fire hazards are very real. Factories use all sorts of volatile gasses and chemicals, there are boilers and there are paint shops. Heaters abound and things are always changing, getting older and developing leaks.

So one should always be aware of what constitutes a fire hazard. Is your electrical system good enough, are the breakers up to date? What about an arc starting a fire if that unsafe pylon were to fall... and so on. This is not an area that can be ignored.

Even if you have your own fire and safety officer it is well worth your while having a fire safety audit to reassure you that, not only is your equipment up to scratch, your fire drills good enough and potential risks identified, but that you are not falsely complacent.
