Understanding Cufflinks Safety: Why You Need To Be Alarmed

You do not have to be James Bond to inject a good measure of danger into everyday objects

. Dangers lurk around every corner and I am inclined to agree with my extremely Gothic nephew when he says that the entire would is a grave yard.

Everything we own or use may see to our demise if we are not cautious enough, cufflinks are not any different. What makes cufflinks dangerous is the fact that they do not pose any obvious threat.

Allow me to explain that: cufflinks are regarded as harmless objects. As such, people are bound to be less vigilant when handling them and therein lies the danger. So, what are these dangers?

Swallowing

As a kid, I consumed a quarter and my concerned mother was so worried that she opted to run to the hospital with me on her back, comforting me all the way. By a stroke of luck, and mainly due to the bumpy ride on her back as she ran to the nearest hospital, the coin dislodged from my throat and fell out.

To this day, I am not sure how her concern made a U-turn and gave way to a crazy rage. The only reason I vividly recall the events from that day is more from the near-death experience from the beating I got as we got back to the house than from almost choking to death.

Cufflinks are small, shiny and captivating. Children are most likely to be attracted to them. If your kid is at that stage where they try to eat anything they get their hands on, you could be the one literally running to the emergency room.

To prevent this from happening, never leave cuff links around in the open. Always make sure you keep them away in a locked drawer whenever you remove them.

Projectiles

The last thing you want coming between the airbag and your head is a tiny metal piece. The airbag deploys with such a force that anything that is on its path on the dashboard can be turned into a flying bullet. Such objects can cause injuries that are unrelated to the accident.

Customary injuries are those to the face and eyes. Whenever you remove your cufflinks in the car, resist all temptations to place them anywhere in the path of the airbags, keeping in mind that this danger is posed even by the side airbags.

The cufflinks can also be a danger when you are wearing them. There have been cases where the hands themselves have become projectiles on making contact with airbag in deployment. While there is nothing much you can do about the hands, taking out the cufflinks can minimize the damage suffered.
