Health Benefits Of Soy
Much propaganda has been released lately on the "dangers" of soy foods
. This has mostly been on the Internet but also in some magazines and publications. Many believe this propaganda has been perpetrated by the dairy and beef industries.
We are told that the original soybean (Glycine soja) is totally different from the modern soybean (Glycine max) and the new bean is really nothing other than "genetically engineered". Yes, all plants are continually grown to produce more and even better crops. The modern Glycine max bean does have a level of production with a higher oil and higher protein content but it has been naturally strain selected and is not even close to being genetically engineered.
The next thing you might hear is that eating soy causes dire illnesses such as thyroid conditions, diabetes, endocrine disorders, nutritional deficiencies, brain dysfunction, pancreatic problems, and even worse, various cancers. Trying to find the proof of these allegations is very hard as they start to evaporate. If you actually try to hunt down any of these so-called "studies" which are said to be so voluminous and look at the few that exist in as much detail as possible, you'll see they have no validity what so ever.
We have also been told this is an "insidious" plot by the company Archer Daniels Midland Corporation to push these dangerous soybeans in order to profit from our gullibility. Well, it is certain that ADM wants to sell soybeans and, of course, it wants to publicize the proven benefits of the healthy soy foods. However, I haven't been able to discover one word regarding this that ADM might not have been factual or lacking in verification.
When you look at the clinical research which is published internationally, you can see just how beneficial soy is. Eating a wide range of healthy foods will still not provide you with 40 mg of iso flavones. As you research different types of diseases and conditions such as cancers, menopause, prostate health, heart and artery disease, the present studies on iso flavones continue to surface repeatedly. The evidence can only be characterized as over whelming.
Let's try to look at cholesterol as an example. There have been through the years so many studies published related to the value of soy supplementation regarding the fact that it lowers the level of total cholesterol and LDL (the bad kind) cholesterol. Soy added to one's diet can also raise HDL (the good kind) cholesterol levels. When soy supplements are added to one's dietary life style, the benefits can be acute and can even be dramatic.
For Americans it is not practical to eat more soy foods just to get the valuable soy iso flavones daidzein and genestein which are found in abundance in soy. Just one cup of soy milk every single day might add 3,000 calories to your monthly diet. Are you really going to be able to eat a half cup of soy flour or a half of a cup of tempeh (have you ever heard of tempeh?) every day? Tofu is so heavily refined, lacking in nutrition and is not a health related food. The only practical way to accomplish this is to be careful and buy a reliable supplement with at least 40 mg of combined soy iso flavones in every capsule. This should be stated on the label.
Let's make something clear here. Even some medical journals are referring to plant flavones (pigments) has "phytoestrogens". As a matter of fact everybody calls them phytoestrogens. The problem is they aren't phytoestrogens at all. They are not even close to estrogens or any other hormones in any way. Flavones are flavonoids which are the plant related pigments. Iso flavones are plant type pigments. Estrogens (estrone, estradiol and estriol) are the hormones secreted by one's endocrine (ductless) glands and are only found in mammals.
If you want to improve your health you should buy a soy iso flavone based supplement with about 40 mg of combined and mixed genestein and daidzein and take no more than one a day. This will cost about $3 per month and will benefit one's health in ways that haven't even been discovered yet. Nowadays, new studies are being conducted and done on a frequent basis in clinics around the world in separate locations. Soy is one of the good guys. Science has proven for the past several decades that soy food is nothing but good for you. Billions of people from Asia have been for centuries as well.
