Health Tourism In Colombia
Tourism in Colombia has been continuously growing by leaps and bounds due to the
increased interest of foreigners in attractions such as beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and Pacific, modern, highly urbanized cities such as Bogota, Medellin and Cali, or historic colonial villages like Villa de Leyva. Lately, visitors are also attracted by the low-priced, yet high quality health services, most predominantly surgical procedures which, in many instances, can be up to 50% cheaper than in the United States. Customers prefer to choose Colombia when it comes to these procedures because they are treated under an assured and guaranteed low-profile.
The most requested health services are ambulatory services, dentistry, plastic surgery, orthopedics and cardiovascular surgery and the majority of customers come from the US, Curacao, Spain, Aruba, Venezuela, Panama, and Canada.
Despite the growing demand, not all health facilities in Colombia are allowed to offer these types of services. The National Ministry of Health has set very strict guidelines and procedures when it comes to granting permissions for any procedure, such as the ones mentioned above. All health care institutions looking forward to offer those services must submit to a very thorough the approval process with the International Joint Commission in order to comply with all technical and quality requirements; thus, there is already a project to create a protocol to provide the best service to foreign customers with the highest possible quality standards.
As with any choice in health care, it is strongly recommended to potential patients to make a very careful evaluation when it comes to choose the place where they want their procedures to be performed, the cost of medical honoraries, fees, prescription medicines and other possible charges, the handling and maintenance of their personally identifiable medical information, and the presence of accredited and internationally recognized surgeons. These precautions, as it is the case for any healthcare choice must never be overlooked by any person wishing to undergo any type of medical treatment.
So far, there are only two health centers that have received the international certification of the International Joint Commission: the "Fundacion Cardiovascular" in Floridablanca, Santander near Bucaramanga, and the "Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota" in Bogot, Cundinamarca. However, there are several other hospitals, clinics and health care institutions undergoing the certification process and all the necessary efforts in order to be certified under standards, thus providing future patients with several choices when evaluating their health care needs.
