The enthusiasm of the young for the World Wide Web and their profuse belief in technology never ceases to amaze me. The vigour with which the youth of today take to information on the internet and its ease of delivery is something I don't think older generations can ever hope to emulate even if they tried with adrenalin-injected enthusiasm.

So I should not have been surprised when a gynecologist friend mentioned that most people who visited her these days were a lot more aware of their bodies and the health issues affecting them. Even more unexpected was the disclosure that the majority of these were young patients and their ubiquitous source of information - the internet. Now wait a minute 16 and 17 year olds having their health diagnosed by complete strangers on a digital platform? Now that sounds like a recipe for disaster.

It turns out that my worries were unfounded. For indeed, the internet may have spewed up a new healthcare revolution of sorts with the creation of the e-patient or internet-savvy patient - health consumers turning to the internet to gather information about a particular or generic medical condition.

A curious mind and a couple of clicks later, here is what I stumbled upon The Pew Internet and American Life Project a survey of the social impact of the internet on Americans that found healthcare to be a major area of study. A few more searches verified the statistics across time zones, age groups and ethnicities, and confirmed the emergence of an entire healthcare ecosystem that is growing online'.

Statistics indicate that six in ten e-patients access blog posts, health news sites, hospital rankings, and other medical and wellness information on peer-generated content sites and professional advice platforms on the internet. Consultation, diagnosis, cure, prevention an almost parallel industry of medical practice is emerging on the digital space and the reasons justify the trend.

An obvious motive is the sheer convenience of having a specialist available to answer your queries at the click of a mouse no chasing appointments and no queuing up correct information made available in real-time via chat or a phone call.

The other rather obvious rationale is the ease of accessing expert advice without actually even moving out of the house. Often, specialists become difficult to get in touch with because of impediments such as geographical distances or astronomical fees, factors which get ruled out to a great extent in the online model.

From our own experience at divinewellness, we know that users love the concept of healthcare advice offered online because of the no-holds barred opportunity that it presents. Not having to face your practitioner is an experience that instills a whole new level of confidence in people and allows them to articulate their concerns with a higher degree of candour, thus making way for a much better diagnosis than possible in the physical world.
